ROTTERDAM – With the season on the line, Averill Park manager George Brooks called upon a freshman who had recently been called up from the junior varsity team to get the big hit.
Pinch hitter Alex Yash was up to the challenge. Yash lined lined a one-out RBI single to drive in the tying run in the top of the seventh inning and then scored the go-ahead run on an error to lift the sixth-seeded Warriors to a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Mohonasen in the Section 2 Class A baseball quarterfinals Saturday, May 25.
“We didn’t have a spot on varsity for him this year, so I put him on JV to get him reps,” said Brooks. “At the same time, we’ve seen him at practice. Something about his swing really stuck with me. So when I had the chance to put him in, I didn’t hesitate.” Continue reading “Scenes from Section 2 Class A baseball playoffs: Alex Yash plays the hero in Averill Park’s comeback over Mohonasen”
