Section 2 football: A first glance at Class A

We will be taking a look at the alignments and schedules for all five football classes in Section 2 this week. To read about Class D, click here. To read about Class C, click here. To read about Class B, click here.

Very little changed for Class A when Section 2 revealed its alignments and schedules for the 2019 football season. Troy, Ballston Spa, LaSalle and Columbia remain in Class A for another season after dropping down from Class AA in 2018.

The lone addition is Albany, a Class AA team that is electing to play a Class A schedule. Albany has made this move before in an attempt to be more competitive during the regular season. Section 2 football playoff brackets are partially set

The playoff seedings for the Section 2 Class A, C and D football playoffs are set, but Class AA and B match-ups are still in the air following Sunday’s seeding meeting.

Shaker (7-0) will be the No. 1 seed in Class AA when the four-team playoff begins Oct. 26, while Shenendehowa (6-1) and Saratoga Springs (6-1) will battle each other Friday, Oct. 19, for the No. 2 seed. The No. 4 seed is up for grabs between Guilderland (4-3), Bethlehem (3-4), Christian Brothers Academy (3-4) and Niskayuna (3-4). A Guilderland victory over CBA Friday guarantees the Dutchmen the No. 4 seed, while a CBA win plus Niskayuna and Bethlehem wins would create a four-way tie for fourth place. Class A football: Jason McCarthy’s five touchdowns propel Ballston Spa past Gloversville in make-up game

BALLSTON SPA – Tailback Jason McCarthy rushed for 137 yards and five touchdowns to lead Ballston Spa to a 41-6 victory over Gloversville in a Class A football game Monday, Sept. 10.

Playoff result: won two crossover games

Returning starters: Keegan Zoller (quarterback), Jason McCarthy (running back/linebacker), Zach Washington (running back/defensive end), Mike Lupo (center), Jake Stangle (offensive tackle/defensive tackle), Colby Harblin (offensive guard), Jimmy Prastio (tight end/wide receiver/linebacker), Aiden Gregory (wide receiver), David Rodack (linebacker), Peyton Walsh (cornerback), Anthony Devizzio (cornerback), Aiden Thomas (safety)

Graduated: Tyler Barnes (defensive end), Joe McDonald (linebacker)

Newcomers: Brandon Stedry (offensive line/defensive line), Jack Veirs (offensive line/defensive line), Tyler Beverly (split end/free safety)

Outlook for season: After finishing 3-6 in 2016 and 4-5 in 2017, Toohey said he is hoping the Scotties take the next step in 2018.

“We want to have the first winning record in our program since 2011,” said Toohey. “We expect to be a playoff team [and] continue our program’s progress.”
