Section 2 Class C boys soccer round-up: Greenwich downs Canajoharie; Waterford-Halfmoon advances on penalty kicks

The quarterfinal field is set in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs following Thursday’s opening round.

No. 6 Greenwich (9-6-2) dispatched No. 22 Canajoharie 8-2 in Greenwich. The Cougars (2-14-2) got on the scoreboard first on Walfre Vasquez’s goal three minutes into the first half, but the Witches scored eight unanswered goals to end Canajoharie’s upset bid.

Charlie Gartner recorded a hat trick, and Liam Kelleher contributed a goal and an assist for Greenwich. AJ Rymph, Bill Bink, Hunter Dixson and Connor Smith also tallied for the Witches. Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs: Catholic Central, Schoharie among teams advancing past preliminary round

No. 17 Catholic Central and No. 13 Schoharie were among six teams advancing through the preliminary round of the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Lucas Kania had a hat trick to lead Catholic Central (5-12-0) to a 7-1 victory over No. 16 Saratoga Central Catholic. Liam McDonald contributed a pair of goals, and Joe Piperata added a goal and two assists for the Crusaders, who will meet top-seeded Lake George Thursday, Oct. 18.

Wasaren League boys soccer: Tyler Nemjo helps Tamarac defeat Stillwater; Waterford-Halfmoon shuts down Berlin

Tyler Nemjo’s performance in goal helped Tamarac fend off Stillwater 2-1 Saturday, Sept. 29, in a Wasaren League boys soccer game.

Nemjo stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced to pick up the victory for the Bengals. Alex Bassey and Xander Gliosco tallied for Tamarac, with Dylan Briccetti picking up an assist.

Wasaren League boys soccer: Tamarac fends off Berlin

Tamarac made two first-half goals stand in a 2-1 victory over Berlin Saturday, Sept. 22, in a Wasaren League boys soccer game.

Goalkeepers Andrew Minbiole and Tyler Nemjo stopped a combined 21 shots on goal by Berlin to help the Bengals pull out the victory. Dylan Briccetti and Ethan Brown scored Tamarac’s goals in the first 40 minutes.

Kasey Billert converted a penalty kick for the Mountaineers.

Wasaren League boys soccer: Hunter Guertin strikes for seven goals in Waterford-Halfmoon’s victory over Berlin

BERLIN – Hunter Guertin notched seven goals and added an assist in Waterford-Halfmoon’s 11-0 victory over Berlin in a Wasaren League boys soccer game Friday, Sept. 14.

Nate Powell contributed two goals and two assists for the Fordians, who led 6-0 at halftime. Jaycen Janusz and Zach Soden also tallied, and goalkeeper Bobby Valigorski stopped two shots.

Berlin goalies combined to make 19 saves against Waterford-Halfmoon.

Wasaren League boys soccer: Greenwich eases past Berlin

Greenwich improved its Wasaren League record to 3-1 with a 6-0 victory over Berlin Tuesday, Sept. 11, in a boys soccer game.

The Witches (3-2 overall) outshot Berlin 18-1 and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, on their way to the convincing victory.

Charlie Gartner tallied twice, while AJ Rymph, Tyler Murray, Christian O’Brien and Tommy Abate added individual goals for Greenwich. Berlin goalkeepers Malek Plouffe and Gabe Colin made a combined total of 11 saves.

Catskill shuts out New Lebanon to win NL Boys Soccer Tournament title

NEW LEBANON – Khimani Rhoden and Jaheim DaCosta scored goals to lead Catskill to a 2-0 victory over New Lebanon in the finals of the New Lebanon Boys Soccer Tournament Saturday, Sept. 8.

Rhoden headed in Addison Allen’s corner kick in the first half to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. DaCosta tallied off a scrum in the penalty box in the second half.

Catskill goalkeeper Andrew Tran made several saves, including turning aside a shot by Cole Keating. Liam McDonald stopped several shots for New Lebanon.

Taconic Hills defeated Berlin 4-0 in the consolation game.

New Lebanon advances to final of its boys soccer tournament with victory over Taconic Hills

NEW LEBANON – New Lebanon earned a rematch with Catskill in the finals of the Tigers’ home boys soccer tournament with a 3-1 victory over Taconic Hills Friday, Sept. 7.
