Boys soccer regionals: Schalmont advances on penalty kicks; Queensbury defeats Fulton

Schalmont (Class B) and Queensbury (Class A) will represent Section 2 at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer Tournament this weekend in Middletown after they won regional titles Saturday, Nov. 3.

Schalmont tied Section 7’s Peru 2-2 in their regional, but punched its ticket to the state semifinals by edging Peru 4-3 in penalty kicks. Jared Smith hit the go-ahead penalty kick for the Sabres, and goalkeeper Ryan Taylor made a diving block with his feet on Tanner Spear’s attempt to end the session.

Peru scored twice in the first 14 minutes to take an early lead on Schalmont, but Ryan Edwards tallied with less than 17 minutes left in the first half to trim the deficit to 2-1. Foothills Council boys soccer: Queensbury wraps up perfect league season with win over South Glens Falls; Hudson Falls prevails over Glens Falls

The Queensbury boys soccer team capped a perfect run through the Foothills Council with a 2-1 victory over South Glens Falls Friday, Oct. 12.

Brendan Duffy scored off a pass from Teddy Borgos and added an unassisted goal to give the Spartans (13-0 league, 15-1 overall) a 2-0 lead in the first half. Lanning Torebka followed his own missed shot with a goal in the 56th minute to draw the Bulldogs (9-4, 10-6) within striking distance, but Queensbury held on for the victory. Foothills Council boys soccer: Queensbury remains unbeaten in the league with victory over South Glens Falls

Queensbury remained the only undefeated boys soccer team in the Foothills Council with a 2-0 victory over South Glens Falls Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The state’s top-ranked Class A squad overcame a shaky start against South High (4-3 league, 5-5 overall) and got the game’s first goal when Peter Crawford scored off a feed from Aidan Jordi-Donnelly a little more than two minutes before halftime. Brendan Duffy added an insurance goal with less than 14 minutes left in regulation for the Spartans (7-0, 9-1). Boys soccer: Queensbury takes sole possession first place in Foothills Council with victory over Hudson Falls

The Queensbury boys soccer team took over sole possession of first place in the Foothills Council with a 5-0 victory over Hudson Falls Monday, Sept. 10.

Aidan Jordan-Donnelly notched the first two goals for the Spartans (4-0 league, 6-1 overall) off assists from Lorenzo Cicagno. Brendan Duffy then headed home a corner kick from Teddy Borgos to put Queensbury ahead 3-0 before halftime.

Drew Crawford and Lucas McCane added goals in the second half, and goalkeeper Ethan Willis made five saves to pick up a combined shutout with Jack Sylvia for Queensbury. Justin Fenton and Joe Potvin had a combined total of 13 saves for Hudson Falls (3-1, 4-2).

Foothills Council boys soccer round-up: Glens Falls fends off Johnstown

Glens Falls jumped out to a two-goal lead and hung on for a 3-2 victory over Johnstown in a Foothills Council boys soccer game Wednesday. Aug. 29.

Seth Davis scored off a Cyrus Guillet assist in the 11th minute of the first half, and Guillet tallied 25 minutes later to put the Indians (1-0) ahead 2-0. Charlie Brown got Johnstown on the board less than eight minutes into the second half to trim Glens Falls’ lead to 2-1, but Guillet struck for his second goal of the afternoon less than four minutes later to put the Indians ahead by two again.

Brown scored his second goal on a throw-in with less than eight minutes left in regulation to make things close for the Sir Bills (0-1), but they got no closer.

Glens Falls goalkeeper Ben Difiore made four saves, while Johnstown netminder Matthew Boyle stopped three shots.

In other Foothills Council action on Wednesday, Queensbury shut out Broadalbin-Perth 3-0, and Schuylerville pulled away for a 5-0 victory at Amsterdam.

Teddy Borgos scored twice, and Brendan Duffy added the other goal for Queensbury (3-1). Lucas McCane and Ray Jones provided the assists. Goalkeeper John Marsden made 15 saves for Broadalbin-Perth (0-1).

Ian Winchell, Christian Petralia, Jared Everleth and Matt McCarthy tallied for Schuylerville (2-0) in its victory over Amsterdam (0-1). Goalkeeper Ian Healy made five saves for the Rugged Rams in the loss.
