SCHENECTADY – Bethlehem won its second consecutive Section 2 Division 1 hockey title by outlasting Shenendehowa 4-2 in the championship game Sunday, Feb. 24, at Union College.
The Eagles (20-2-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on two quick goals by Michael Bievenue. The junior forward’s first goal came 22 seconds into the match and the second a little more than three minutes later. After Shen got on the scoreboard early in the second period, Bievenue struck again to put Bethlehem ahead 3-1.
Shen (16-6-1) pulled back within one goal again in the third period when Brennan Alheim tallied, but Ben LaVigne scored off a Bievenue assist to give Bethlehem the insurance goal it needed.
LaVigne assisted on two of Bievenue’s three goals, and goalie Michael Kurdziolek stopped 27 shots to propel Bethlehem into the regionals. Oliver Mathison scored in the third overtime to lift No. 6 Burnt Hills/Ballston spa to a 4-3 victory over No. 3 Saratoga Springs Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Section 2 Division 1 hockey quarterfinals at Weibel Avenue Rink.
Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Saratoga Springs rallied in the second period to pull even at 2-2. The two teams traded goals in the third period and then played through two scoreless overtimes before Mathison tallied the game winner.

Capital District High School Hockey League regular season champion Bethlehem swept the top three awards when Section 2 announced its postseason all-stars Sunday, Feb. 16.
Forward Michael Bievenue won the scoring title and was named Section 2’s Player of the Year, while Michael Kurdziolek was chosen by Section 2 coaches as the Leading Goaltender. Bievenue scored 46 goals and finished with 68 points, while Kurdziolek posted a 12-2-1 record with a 2.20 goals against average and a league-leading .919 save percentage.
Kurdziolek, forward Justin Chenaille and defenseman John Thibodeau from Bethlehem were named to the All-Section 2 team, along with Albany Academy forward Anthony Sericolo, Christian Brothers Academy forward Hunter Pemrick and Queensbury defenseman Brayden Ordway.
Chenaille led the league in assists with 31 and was second to Bievenue in goals (24) and points (55), while Thibodeau topped the league in assists by a defenseman with 16. Sericolo tied Shenendehowa’s Brennan Alheim for fourth place in points with 36, while Pemrick posted 24 points for the Brothers. The Section 2 Division 1 hockey playoffs are set to begin Saturday, Feb. 16, with two opening-round games.
No. 11 Capital District (0-20-0) faces off with No. 6 Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa (10-7-3) at 5:30 p.m. at the Schenectady County Recreational Facility in Glenville, while No. 10 Adirondack (4-14-2) visits No. 7 LaSalle (7-12-1) at 7:15 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. The final opening round game is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 18, at the Schenectady County Recreational Facility between No. 8 GMSVS Storm (6-11-3) and No. 9 Niskayuna/Schenectady Albany (5-14-1).
Capital District High School Hockey League regular season champion Bethlehem (17-2-1) has the No. 1 seed and a bye into the quarterfinals, where it will meet the winner of GMSVS and Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Bethlehem Area YMCA. No. 2 Shenendehowa (14-5-1) and No. 3 Saratoga Springs (15-5-0) also have a bye and await the results from the opening round. No. 4 Christian Brothers Academy (12-8-0) and No. 5 Albany Academy (12-7-0) face off in the quarterfinals Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Albany County Hockey Training Facility in Colonie.

Christian Brothers Academy scored three unanswered goals in the second period on its way to a 4-2 victory over the Capital District Jets in a Capital District High School Hockey League doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Times Union Center in Albany.
David Clemenzi gave the Jets a 1-0 lead within the first two minutes of the first period, but Hunter Pemrick tallied with 2:31 left in the frame to knot the score at 1-1 for the Brothers. Pemrick, Ryan McMahon and Greg Beaulieu scored in the second period to put CBA ahead 4-1.

Michael Bievenue continues to light the lamp at a high rate.
The Bethlehem junior forward scored six goals and added an assist to lead the Eagles to a 12-2 victory over the Capital District Jets Wednesday, Feb. 6, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Bethlehem Area YMCA.
It was the second consecutive six-goal game for Bievenue, who now leads the CDHSHL with 45 goals and 67 points. Bievenue has scored at least two goals in seven of his last eight games and has registered hat tricks six times during this most recent stretch of games. Bethlehem’s Michael Bievenue could not be stopped as he led the Eagles to a 7-2 victory over Albany Academy Friday, Feb. 1, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Albany Academy Fieldhouse.
Bievenue scorched the nets for six goals to raise his Section 2-leading goal total to 39 for the season. Justin Chenaille contributed a goal and three assists, while Ben LaVigne, William Bievenue and Connor Carroll all added a pair of assists. Goalie Michael Kurdziolek stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced to earn the victory.

DELMAR – Michael Bievenue continues to be an unstoppable force of nature for the Bethlehem hockey team.
The junior recorded his fourth hat trick in his last five games and his seventh of the season in the Eagles 5-1 victory over Christian Brothers Academy Friday, Jan. 25, on “Big Orange Freakout” night at the Bethlehem Area YMCA.
“My linemates have been incredible,” said Bievenue, who leads the Capital District High School Hockey League with 31 goals and 52 points. “They helped me get these hat tricks. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
“Bievenue has by far is very talented with a very good work ethic, and when he combines that with his effort, it’s a sight to see,” said Bethlehem head coach Dylan Lappe. “I’m blessed to have him for another year.”
Bievenue got Bethlehem (9-2-0 league, 14-2-0 overall) on the scoreboard early in the first period with a power play goal. Justin Chenaille’s original shot was stopped by CBA goaltender Josh Coburn, but Bievenue was positioned perfectly between the face-off cicles to rifle home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
Bethlehem fished for a couple more goals while killing penalties in the first period. Chenaille poke-checked the puck away from a CBA player and had an open shot on goal that Coburn knocked aside. Later on, Carroll stole the puck and skated in on Coburn, but the junior stopped that shot to keep the score 1-0 going into the first intermission. Shenendehowa scored three goals in the third period to defeat Queensbury 5-2 Friday, Jan. 18, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Clifton Park Arena.
Brennan Alheim and Cole Haldane each had a pair of goals and an assist for the Plainsmen (5-2-0 league, 9-4-1 overall). Goalie Kent Leighton stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced.

Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa moved into a tie with Bethlehem for first place in the Capital District High School Hockey League with a 3-0 victory over Shenendehowa Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Schenectady County Recreational Facility in Glenville.
Goalie Kyle Grace made 25 saves to earn his second shutout of the season for Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa (6-2-0 league, 9-3-0 overall). Noah Sinclair tallied in the second period, while Grant Rice and Sean Speck added insurance goals in the third period.
Elsewhere in the CDHSHL, Joe Amodio and Michael Montague each scored a pair of goals to lead Saratoga Springs (6-2-0, 10-3-0) to a 5-2 victory over LaSalle (3-5-0, 4-7-1) at Hudson Valley Community College. Andrew Blanchard also tallied for the Blue Streaks, and goalie Brad Blake stopped 20 shots.
