Section 2 Class AA boys basketball playoffs: Higher seeds sweep opening round games

The higher-seeded teams won in the opening round of the Section 2 Class AA boys basketball playoffs Wednesday, Feb. 20.

No. 8 LaSalle pulled away from No. 9 Schenectady in the fourth quarter to prevail 66-54 and advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal game against top-seeded Bethlehem at Hudson Valley Community College. Connor Cepiel had 15 points, while Sean Desharnais and Gabe Lucarelli each added 12 points for the Cadets. Jonon White netted 19 points for the Patriots.

No. 7 Colonie moved on with a 62-36 victory over No. 10 Albany. Aaron Satin scored 18 points for the Garnet Raiders, who used a 21-7 run in the third quarter to take control. Brendan Coyle contributed 13 points, and Donovan Canty chipped in with 10 points. Tye-Rell Monroe had seven points for Albany. Colonie faces No. 2 Saratoga Springs in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Scenes from Section 2 boys basketball: Schalmont tops Troy as part of showcase hosted by Mekeel Christian

GLENS FALLS – The Cool Insuring Arena was once again home to a day of Section 2 basketball, as Mekeel Christian Academy hosted the Sunmark Shootout Saturday, Feb. 2.

In one of the best match-ups of the day, Schalmont upended Troy 78-76 in a battle of the top teams from the Colonial and Suburban councils. The Sabres built a five-point lead at the end of the third quarter, and then hung on as the Flying Horses rallied in the fourth quarter.

Shane O’Dell lit up the scoreboard with a 36-point night for Schalmont that included an 11-for-11 performance at the free throw line. LJ Randle dropped a pair of three-pointers on his way to a 19-point effort.

Latyce Faison sank four three-pointers and finished with 30 points for Troy, which suffered its second non-league loss of the season. Nazaire Merritt chipped in with 28 points, including four three-pointers of his own. Suburban Council boys basketball: Bethlehem wins battle of undefeated teams

A big third quarter helped Bethlehem defeat Saratoga Springs 75-65 in a battle of undefeated Suburban Council boys basketball teams Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The Eagles outscored the Blue Streaks 25-16 in the third period to open up a 12-point lead. Saratoga Springs made several attempts to get back into the game, but Bethlehem held on for the 10-point win.

Pat Ryan played a big role in Bethlehem’s victory. The senior guard made six three-pointers on his way to a season-high 20-point performance. Jake LaClair contributed 15 points, while Eric Signor (12 points) and Michael Ortale (11 points) added a combined total of 23 points.

Will Fox paced Saratoga Springs with 18 points, and Aidan Holmes chipped in with 16 points.

Suburban Council boys basketball: Bethlehem and Saratoga Springs remain undefeated ahead of Tuesday’s showdown

The two remaining undefeated Suburban Council boys basketball teams are set to square off Tuesday, Jan. 15, as Bethlehem and Saratoga Springs each won Friday night.

Bethlehem (8-0 league, 11-0 overall) closed the game on a 15-6 run to defeat Christian Brothers Academy 62-54 in Colonie. Michael Ortale netted 20 points, and Justin Barnes added 16 points to help the Eagles offset Jordan King’s 36-point performance for the Brothers.

Saratoga Springs (8-0, 10-0) built a 33-24 halftime lead and fended off Niskayuna 67-57. Nate Chudy had 24 points, and Aidan Holmes contributed 19 points for the Blue Streaks. Nick Benton scored 17 points for the Silver Warriors, and Richie Quinn added 15 points.

Suburban Council boys basketball: Shenendehowa moves back over .500 with win over Shaker

The Shenendehowa boys basketball team moved over .500 overall with a 53-37 victory over Shaker Tuesday, Jan. 8, in a Suburban Council game.

The Plainsmen (5-3 league, 6-5 overall) built a 39-18 lead through the first three quarters, and they didn’t look back in handing the Blue Bison (0-8, 1-11) their 10th consecutive loss.

Suburban Council boys basketball: Troy hangs on for four-point victory over Shenendehowa

Troy weathered a fourth-quarter rally by Shenendehowa to pull out a 60-56 victory Friday, Jan. 4, in a Suburban Council boys basketball game.

The Flying Horses carried a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter before the Plainsmen rallied to make it a one-possession game near the end of regulation.

Guards Latyce Faison and Nazaire Meritt had a field day from behind the three-point arc for Troy. Faison sank seven threes on his way to a 26-point night, while Meritt had five threes as part of a 24-point performance.

Boys basketball: Tamarac upends Fort Ann; Albany Academy handles Newburgh Free Academy

Tamarac used a 23-7 second-quarter spurt to pull away for a 64-51 victory over Fort Ann in a non-league boys basketball game Saturday, Dec. 22.

Bo Catherwood led a balanced Bengals attack with 18 points. Frank Zotto contributed 12 points, while Anthony Ciampolillo and Jacob DeFreest each added 10 points.

Luke Loso had 16 points, and Ritchie Jones chipped in with 11 points for Fort Ann.

Suburban Council boys basketball: Shenendehowa uses big run to take down Columbia; CBA hangs on for a victory

Shenendehowa outscored Columbia 35-16 over the course of the second and third quarters to defeat the Blue Devils 64-45 Tuesday, Dec. 18, in a Suburban Council boys basketball game.

Jake Reinisch had another big night for the Plainsmen. Reinisch made six shots from beyond the three-point arc and finished with 30 points to lead all scorers. Nick Lemire added 12 points, nine of which came from beyond the three-point line.
