The higher-seeded teams won in the opening round of the Section 2 Class AA boys basketball playoffs Wednesday, Feb. 20.
No. 8 LaSalle pulled away from No. 9 Schenectady in the fourth quarter to prevail 66-54 and advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal game against top-seeded Bethlehem at Hudson Valley Community College. Connor Cepiel had 15 points, while Sean Desharnais and Gabe Lucarelli each added 12 points for the Cadets. Jonon White netted 19 points for the Patriots.
No. 7 Colonie moved on with a 62-36 victory over No. 10 Albany. Aaron Satin scored 18 points for the Garnet Raiders, who used a 21-7 run in the third quarter to take control. Brendan Coyle contributed 13 points, and Donovan Canty chipped in with 10 points. Tye-Rell Monroe had seven points for Albany. Colonie faces No. 2 Saratoga Springs in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Shenendehowa used a 21-9 run in the third quarter to take control in a 60-50 victory over Ballston Spa Friday, Feb. 1, in a Suburban Council boys basketball game.
James Altenburger netted 18 points, and Jake Reinisch contributed 12 points on four three-pointers for the Plainsmen, who trailed 26-25 at halftime. Jayson Faizy drained six three-pointers as part of a 22-point night for the Scotties.
Elsewhere in the Suburban Council, Bethlehem survived a scare from Schenectady and defeated the Patriots 75-70 to remain undefeated. Erik Salo scored 19 points, Justin Barnes chipped in with 17 points and Michael Ortale added 13 points for the Eagles. Watervliet went on a 19-9 run in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 61-47 victory over Mohonasen Friday, Jan. 18, in a Colonial Council boys basketball game.
J.J. Chestnut scored 22 points to lead the Cannoneers, who handed Mohonasen its first loss in its last eight games. Derrick Beason contributed 14 points, and Messiah Mallory added 13 points for Watervliet.

Watervliet fended off a fourth quarter rally to defeat LaSalle 69-60 Tuesday, Jan. 15, in a Colonial Council boys basketball game.
The Cannoneers went on a 22-10 run in the second quarter to take 34-26 halftime lead against the Cadets. Watervliet extended its advantage to 14 points in the third quarter before LaSalle made a late push to trim the deficit to under double digits.

Mohonasen outscored Catholic Central 23-9 in the second quarter to take control on its way to a 66-50 home victory Friday, Jan. 11, in a Colonial Council boys basketball game.
Duncan Tallman led four Mohonasen players in double digits with 15 points. Nicholas Richmond had 13 points, Shawn Gillisslee contributed 12 points and Logan Calkins added 10 points for the Mighty Warriors.
