Boys basketball: Schalmont, Mekeel Christian, Shaker and Albany Academy post wins at North-South Classic

ALBANY – Schalmont, Mekeel Christian, Shaker and Albany Academy won their games at Saturday’s ZG Slam North South Classic at the Washington Avenue Armory.

Schalmont kicked off the first day of the event with a 63-40 victory over Colonial Council rival Cobleskill-Richmondville. The Bulldogs hung with the Sabres through the first quarter, but Schalmont pulled away with a 13-4 run in the second quarter and a 22-6 spurt in the third quarter.

Shane O’Dell poured in 25 points to lead Schalmont. LJ Randle contributed 11 points, and Gannon Strube added 10 points. Donovan Pacatte got into early foul trouble for Cobleskill-Richmondville and was limited to 10 points. Suburban Council boys basketball: Bethlehem wins battle of undefeated teams

A big third quarter helped Bethlehem defeat Saratoga Springs 75-65 in a battle of undefeated Suburban Council boys basketball teams Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The Eagles outscored the Blue Streaks 25-16 in the third period to open up a 12-point lead. Saratoga Springs made several attempts to get back into the game, but Bethlehem held on for the 10-point win.

Pat Ryan played a big role in Bethlehem’s victory. The senior guard made six three-pointers on his way to a season-high 20-point performance. Jake LaClair contributed 15 points, while Eric Signor (12 points) and Michael Ortale (11 points) added a combined total of 23 points.

Will Fox paced Saratoga Springs with 18 points, and Aidan Holmes chipped in with 16 points.

State football semifinals: Glens Falls pulls away from Marlboro, while Shaker and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake lose close contests

MIDDLETOWN – Glens Falls punched its ticket to the Carrier Dome after defeating Marlboro (Section 9) 48-28 in the Class B state football semifinals Saturday, Nov. 17, at Middletown High School.

The Indians (11-1) scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to break open a close game and advance to next weekend’s championship game against Batavia (Section 5) in Syracuse. Section 2 football: A look back at the Super Bowls, and a look ahead to regionals (with photo gallery)

Three Section 2 football teams have regional playoff games this weekend, while two others await their semifinal opponents.

Class AA champion Shaker (10-0) received a bye into the state semifinals after defeating Saratoga Springs 28-14 in the championship game Friday, Nov. 2, at Casey Stadium on the University at Albany campus. This bye is rotated between Sections 2, 1 and 9 on an annual basis. Shaker meets either Section 1 champion New Rochelle or Section 9 champion Newburgh Free Academy Saturday, Nov. 17, at Middletown High School.

Class A champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (9-1) also received a bye into the semifinals after Section X decided not to play in the regional round. The Spartans face the winner of the John Jay (Section 1)-Cornwall (Section 9) regional in the state semifinals Friday, Nov. 16, in Middletown.

Glens Falls (Class B), Cambridge/Salem (Class C) and Warrensburg (Class D) all play in this weekend’s regional round. Glens Falls meets Section 7 champion Beekmantown Friday, Nov. 9, at Shenendehowa High School, while Cambridge/Salem travels to Potsdam High School to play Section 10 champ Ogdensburg Free Academy. Warrensburg faces Section 7 champion Moriah Saturday, Nov. 10, at Schuylerville High School. Section 2 Class AA football: Shaker wins a defensive battle against Shenendehowa

LATHAM – Two high-powered offensive Section 2 Class AA football teams waged a defensive battle Friday, Sept. 21.

Scenes from Section 2 Class AA football: Shaker defeats Shenendehowa in defensive battle

LATHAM – Connor McHugh’s 1-yard touchdown plunge with 3:14 left in regulation lifted Shaker (4-0) to a 14-7 victory over Shenendehowa in a battle of undefeated Section 2 Class AA football teams Friday, Sept. 21.

Kyle Gregor tied the score at 7-7 on a 2-yard scoring plunge with 8:53 left in the fourth quarter for Shenendehowa (3-1), but a long kickoff return by Logan Souza and a 20-yard pass from McHugh to Souza set up McHugh’s go-ahead touchdown. Outlook for season: After losing to Saratoga in the Sectional semifinals last year, the Blue Bison are looking to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2016.

“If our offensive line comes together and we fight the injury bug that plagued us last season,” we will do well, said Sheeler.
