Soccer: Bethlehem boys edge Shaker in Suburban Council showdown

The Bethlehem boys soccer team made an early goal stand up in a 1-0 Suburban Council victory over Shaker Thursday, Sept. 5, in Latham.

Bethlehem received a corner kick one minute into the contest after Shaker’s defense cleared the ball over its own end line. On the corner itself, the ball bounced around the penalty box until Salko Kanic knocked it into the back of the net to give the Eagles the lead.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances throughout the rest of the game, but neither could finish their opportunities. Bethlehem finished the afternoon with 15 shots on goal and six corners, while Shaker registered 17 shots on frame and five corners.

Elsewhere in the Suburban Council, Paul Abatiello scored two minutes into extra time to give Christian Brothers Academy a 3-2 victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Abatiello struck in the seventh minute off an assist from Alejandro Torres to put the Brothers ahead 1-0. Jacob Scott converted a penalty kick five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1, but Wyatt Leto tallied in the 29th minute off a feed from Abatiello to give CBA a 2-1 halftime advantage.

Scott scored again two minutes into the second half to knot the score at 2-2 for BH-BL. The game remained deadlocked through the remained of regulation before Abatiello netted the game winner in overtime.

In the Foothills Council, Queensbury tallied four times in the second half to pull away for a 5-0 victory over Hudson Falls. Teddy Borgos scored two goals and added two assists for the Spartans. Peter Crawford, Asa Edwards and Brendan Duffy also recorded goals for Queensbury. Goaltender Joey Lapan made 15 saves for Hudson Falls.

In the Colonial Council, LaSalle edged Schalmont 1-0 on a first-half goal by Bennett Beaulieu. Anthony Rotello had 10 saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Cadets. Ryan Taylor made six saves for Schalmont.

In the Western Athletic Conference, Schoharie downed an undermanned Duanesburg squad 17-0. Noah Fagnani led the Indians with eight goals and two assists. The Eagles dressed only nine players due to low numbers and minimum practice regulations.

In non-league action, Greenwich edged Doane Stuart 4-3. Charlie Gartner and Tommy Abate each scored a goal in the first 12 minutes of the second half to give the Witches a 3-1 lead. AJ Rymph tallied twice for the Witches, while Nelson and Lwel Htoo scored for the Thunder Chickens.

Waterford-Halfmoon shut out Corinth 6-0 in another non-league contest. Nate Powell and Jason Cordts each netted two goals for the Fordians, and goaltender Jake Houle made five saves for the shutout, including one on a penalty kick.

Boys soccer: Doane Stuart defeats Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in tournament

Joey DiPetra and Myo Pine each had hat tricks to lead Doane Stuart to a 9-0 victory over Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons at the Stillwater Boys Soccer Tournament Aug. 31.

Pine tallied all of his goals in the first half to stake the Thunder Chickens to an early lead. DiPetra contributed a pair of assists to go along with his three goals, while Nelson Htoo added a goal and three assists in the victory. Section 2 Class C boys soccer: Top four seeds advance to semifinals

The top four seeds in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs advanced to the semifinal round with quarterfinal victories Monday, Oct. 22.

No. 1 Lake George (18-0-0) got past No. 8 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 3-1, as Alex Leonelli, Ethan Knauf and Justin Blanco tallied for the Warriors. Lake George goalkeeper Mason Flatley had several saves, including a key stop late in the second half. Wil Lawson notched Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons’ goal. Section 2 Class C boys soccer round-up: Greenwich downs Canajoharie; Waterford-Halfmoon advances on penalty kicks

The quarterfinal field is set in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs following Thursday’s opening round.

No. 6 Greenwich (9-6-2) dispatched No. 22 Canajoharie 8-2 in Greenwich. The Cougars (2-14-2) got on the scoreboard first on Walfre Vasquez’s goal three minutes into the first half, but the Witches scored eight unanswered goals to end Canajoharie’s upset bid.

Charlie Gartner recorded a hat trick, and Liam Kelleher contributed a goal and an assist for Greenwich. AJ Rymph, Bill Bink, Hunter Dixson and Connor Smith also tallied for the Witches. Central Hudson Valley League boys soccer: New Lebanon and Doane Stuart play to a tie

Six different players scored goals as New Lebanon and Doane Stuart played to a 3-3 tie Wednesday, Oct. 10, in a Central Hudson Valley League boys soccer game.

Paulo Scolari had a goal and an assist to lead New Lebanon’s offense. James Lambert and Liam McDonald also tallied for the Tigers.

Joe Dipreta, Kyaw Lwin and Abe Gordon scored Doane Stuart’s goals.

Eh Doh Kyi knocked the final goal in late in the second half to give Doane Stuart a 5-4 victory over New Lebanon in a wild Central Hudson Valley League boys soccer game Friday, Sept. 14.

New Lebanon rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the score on James Lambert’s second goal of the game with eight minutes left in the second half. It looked like the game was headed to overtime until Kyi knocked the ball free from the grasp of New Lebanon’s goalkeeper and scored.
