Soccer: Bethlehem boys edge Shaker in Suburban Council showdown

The Bethlehem boys soccer team made an early goal stand up in a 1-0 Suburban Council victory over Shaker Thursday, Sept. 5, in Latham.

Bethlehem received a corner kick one minute into the contest after Shaker’s defense cleared the ball over its own end line. On the corner itself, the ball bounced around the penalty box until Salko Kanic knocked it into the back of the net to give the Eagles the lead.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances throughout the rest of the game, but neither could finish their opportunities. Bethlehem finished the afternoon with 15 shots on goal and six corners, while Shaker registered 17 shots on frame and five corners.

Elsewhere in the Suburban Council, Paul Abatiello scored two minutes into extra time to give Christian Brothers Academy a 3-2 victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Abatiello struck in the seventh minute off an assist from Alejandro Torres to put the Brothers ahead 1-0. Jacob Scott converted a penalty kick five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1, but Wyatt Leto tallied in the 29th minute off a feed from Abatiello to give CBA a 2-1 halftime advantage.

Scott scored again two minutes into the second half to knot the score at 2-2 for BH-BL. The game remained deadlocked through the remained of regulation before Abatiello netted the game winner in overtime.

In the Foothills Council, Queensbury tallied four times in the second half to pull away for a 5-0 victory over Hudson Falls. Teddy Borgos scored two goals and added two assists for the Spartans. Peter Crawford, Asa Edwards and Brendan Duffy also recorded goals for Queensbury. Goaltender Joey Lapan made 15 saves for Hudson Falls.

In the Colonial Council, LaSalle edged Schalmont 1-0 on a first-half goal by Bennett Beaulieu. Anthony Rotello had 10 saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Cadets. Ryan Taylor made six saves for Schalmont.

In the Western Athletic Conference, Schoharie downed an undermanned Duanesburg squad 17-0. Noah Fagnani led the Indians with eight goals and two assists. The Eagles dressed only nine players due to low numbers and minimum practice regulations.

In non-league action, Greenwich edged Doane Stuart 4-3. Charlie Gartner and Tommy Abate each scored a goal in the first 12 minutes of the second half to give the Witches a 3-1 lead. AJ Rymph tallied twice for the Witches, while Nelson and Lwel Htoo scored for the Thunder Chickens.

Waterford-Halfmoon shut out Corinth 6-0 in another non-league contest. Nate Powell and Jason Cordts each netted two goals for the Fordians, and goaltender Jake Houle made five saves for the shutout, including one on a penalty kick.

The top four seeds in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs advanced to the semifinal round with quarterfinal victories Monday, Oct. 22.

No. 1 Lake George (18-0-0) got past No. 8 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 3-1, as Alex Leonelli, Ethan Knauf and Justin Blanco tallied for the Warriors. Lake George goalkeeper Mason Flatley had several saves, including a key stop late in the second half. Wil Lawson notched Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons’ goal. Section 2 Class C boys soccer round-up: Greenwich downs Canajoharie; Waterford-Halfmoon advances on penalty kicks

The quarterfinal field is set in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs following Thursday’s opening round.

No. 6 Greenwich (9-6-2) dispatched No. 22 Canajoharie 8-2 in Greenwich. The Cougars (2-14-2) got on the scoreboard first on Walfre Vasquez’s goal three minutes into the first half, but the Witches scored eight unanswered goals to end Canajoharie’s upset bid.

Charlie Gartner recorded a hat trick, and Liam Kelleher contributed a goal and an assist for Greenwich. AJ Rymph, Bill Bink, Hunter Dixson and Connor Smith also tallied for the Witches. Wasaren League boys soccer: Hunter Guertin’s hat trick leads Waterford-Halfmoon to victory; Greenwich shuts out Saratoga Central Catholic

Hunter Guertin recorded a hat trick to lead Waterford-Halfmoon to a 4-2 victory over Hoosic Valley Friday, Oct. 5, in a Wasaren League boys soccer game.

Jaycen Janusz contributed a goal, and goalkeeper Bobby Valigorsky made 14 saves for the Fordians. Isaac Carlo tallied for Hoosic Valley off a free kick. An own goal against Waterford-Halfmoon with 30 seconds left gave the Indians their other goal. Wasaren League boys soccer: Tamarac doubles up Greenwich

GREENWICH – Tamarac rallied from an early two-goal deficit to defeat Greenwich 4-2 Wednesday, Oct. 3, in a Wasaren League boys soccer game.

Charlie Gartner assisted on AJ Rymph’s goal and then notched one of his own to give the Witches their lead within the first 15 minutes. An own goal against Greenwich and Alex Bassey’s marker pulled Tamarac even before halftime.

Max Ali put the Bengals ahead in the second half with a penalty kick, and Dylan Briccetti added an insurance goal off a direct kick.

Tamarac goalkeeper Tyler Nemjo stopped six shots, while Greenwich netminder Sam Whiting was credited with three saves.

Tamarac hung on for a 3-2 victory over Hoosic Valley in a Wasaren League boys soccer game Thursday, Sept. 27.

Wasaren League boys soccer: Greenwich earns road tie against Waterford-Halfmoon

WATERFORD – Two of the better Wasaren League boys soccer teams clashed in Waterford Wednesday, Sept. 19, with Greenwich and Waterford-Halfmoon playing to a 1-1 tie.

The Fordians (3-1-2) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on Hunter Guertin’s penalty kcik goal. The Witches (4-2-1) responded in the second half when Charlie Gartner put home his own shot from the penalty spot, and the score remained tied through the next 45 minutes of regulation and overtime.

Greenwich goalkeeper Sam Whiting stopped 10 shots, while Waterford-Halfmoon goalie Bobby Valigorsky had eight saves.

Wasaren League boys soccer: Stillwater edges Tamarac in OT; Waterford-Halfmoon shuts out Saratoga Central Catholic

Scott Travis tapped in the winning goal four minutes into overtime to lift Stillwater to a 3-2 victory over Tamarac Monday, Sept. 17, in a Wasaren League boys soccer game.

Travis was responsible for all of the Warriors’ goals. He headed in the first one off a corner kick from Grant Baker that tied the score at 1-1. Travis repeated the process a short time later, this time heading in a crossing pass from Jake Zdonick for a 2-1 Stillwater lead. Greenwich defeats Greenville in Mayfield Boys Soccer Tournament consolation game

A quick burst of goals by Greenwich helped the Witches defeat Greenville 5-2 in the consolation game of the Mayfield Boys Soccer Tournament Saturday, Sept. 15.

Greenville (2-5) took a 1-0 lead on Timothy Biernacki scored off a lead pass from Bergen Criswell in the fifth minute. Greenwich (5-2) responded 40 seconds later on a goal by Liam Niesz off a rebound, and then Charlie Gartner scored twice in a five-minute time span to put the Witches ahead 3-1. Wasaren League boys soccer: Waterford-Halfmoon defeats Hoosic Valley; Greenwich shuts down Hoosick Falls

Hunter Guertin had a foot in all three Waterford-Halfmoon goals in a 3-0 victory over Hoosic Valley Thursday, Sept. 13, in a Wasaren League boys soccer game.

Guertin sent a crossing pass into the penalty box to Tyler Galarneau, who knocked the ball into the goal to give the Fordians a 1-0 lead at the 18-minute mark. Guertin tallied in the 31st minute to double Waterford-Halfmoon’s lead, and then he sent a crossing pass to Jason Cordts midway through the second half for the Fordians’ final goal.
