Section 2 wins several titles at state track meet

MIDDLETOWN – It was a good weekend for Section 2 athletes at the New York State High School Track and Field Championships at Middletown High School.

Colonie and Schenectady’s 400-meter boys relay teams highlighted the weekend by taking the top two places in Saturday’s Federation championship race. Fresh off winning the public school Division 1 championship Friday, Colonie’s team of Josiah Kemp, Shai Young, Cristian Hubbard and Michael Hermance claimed the Federation title with a time of 41.39 seconds. Schenectady – which placed fourth in the Division 1 race – took second place with a time of 41.75 seconds,

Section 2 also demonstrated its strength in the boys pole vault. Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Shane Racey cleared the bar at 16 feet to win the Division 2 and Federation titles, while Albany Academy’s Donald Jones finished second by clearing 15 feet, 6 inches. State track meet primer: Ama Boham, Allie Ryder and Donald Jones lead list of Section 2 contenders

Three Section 2 athletes enter this weekend’s New York State High School Track and Field Championships with the top performances in their individual events.

Ichabod Crane’s Ama Boham posted the top time among Division 2 (small school) athletes in the girls 100-meter high hurdles this season (14.40). No other girl in the Division 2 field posted a time close to Boham’s mark, and it is the second-fastest overall in New York State this season. Only Chibugo Obichere of Division 1’s Valley Stream South (Section 8) posted a faster overall time (13.80).

New Lebanon’s Allie Ryder enters the state meet with the top distance among Division 2 throwers in the girls discus. Ryder’s best throw this season is 122 feet, 5 inches, 2 inches ahead of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s LeeAnne Lowery. Three Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys cross country runners named first team All-State by sportswriters association

Cross Country Sectionals-28Three Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys cross country team members were named Class B first team All-State runners by the New York State Sportswriters Association Tuesday, Dec. 18.

Seniors Tyler Berg, Aidan Gillooley and Evan Brennan joined Runner of the Year Parker Stokes (Maine-Endwell), Ryan Guerci (Nanuet), Sam Lawler (Pittsford Mendon) and Jack Rosencrans (North Shore) in receiving first team honors. Senior Nick Hunziker was named to the second team, and junior Kevin Board received fourth team honors. Junior David Metacarpa was an honorable mention. A look back at the Section 2 Cross Country Championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS – One race lived up to its pre-event billing, while another showdown never materialized at Friday’s Section 2 Cross Country Championships at a soggy Saratoga Spa State Park.

The Class A boys race turned into a battle royale between Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs, with the Plainsmen pulling out a three-point victory over the Blue Streaks, 60-63. Saratoga had two of the top four runners in the race, but Shen’s pack mentality proved to be the deciding factor.

Cross country: Shaker girls win South Glens Falls Killian Invitational

SOUTH GLENS FALLS – Shaker claimed first place in the Girls Varsity division, and Saranac Lake won the boys division title at the South Glens Falls Killian Invitational Saturday, Sept. 29.

Kaleigh Higgins and Leoni Griffin swept the top two places to lead Shaker’s girls team. Higgins won the individual title with a time of 18:14.28, and Griffin took second place with a time of 18:23.09. Continue reading “Cross country: Shaker girls win South Glens Falls Killian Invitational”

Top Section 2 cross country performances from September 22

There were several noteworthy performances around Section 2 cross country from Sept. 22:

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys cross country team took first place in the Varsity Large division at the Baldwinsville Invitational outside Syracuse on Saturday, Sept. 22. Tyler Berg, Evan Brennan and Aidan Gillooley swept the top three places for the Spartans, who won the division with 26 points.
