CARY, N.C. – McKinley Wheeler’s first trip to the New Balance Nationals track and field meet led to a pair of titles.
The Saratoga Springs eighth-grader won the middle school girls 2-mile race in a battle with her twin sister, Sheridan. Then, she teamed up with Sophie Tesla, Ella Kurto and Kelsey Chmiel to win the girls championship 4×1 mile relay.
The Wheeler twins led a strong contingent of Section 2 runners in the middle school girls 2-mile run. McKinley finished with a winning time of 11:04.58, while Sheridan placed second with a time of 11:08.24. Shaker’s Kaleigh Higgins was third with a time of 11:21.03, and Greenwich’s Teagan Wright took 13th place with a time of 12:01.50. ALBANY – Section 2 held its state indoor track and field qualifier Sunday, Feb. 24, at the University at Albany.
Colonie’s Josiah Kemp and Averill Park’s James Cocca each won two individual boys events. Kemp took first place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.57 seconds, and he finished first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.52 seconds. Cocca swept the throwing events, winning the shot put and the weight throw.
On the girls’ side, Saratoga Springs’ Ella Kurto won the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:49.15 and the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:04.13. Guilderland’s Isabella Bruno finished first in the long jump and the triple jump, while Shenendehowa’s Chidera Anameze earned victories in the shot put and weight throw.
The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships, which take place Saturday, March 2, at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility on Staten Island. Saratoga Springs’ Kelsey Chmiel was named Senior of the Year by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS) when it released its All-State teams in girls cross country.
Chmiel led the Blue Streaks to the Section 2 and New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A titles this season. She won the Section 2 title and placed second to North Rockland’s Katelyn Tuohy – who was named the Overall Runner of the Year – at the state meet.

SARATOGA SPRINGS – One race lived up to its pre-event billing, while another showdown never materialized at Friday’s Section 2 Cross Country Championships at a soggy Saratoga Spa State Park.
The Class A boys race turned into a battle royale between Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs, with the Plainsmen pulling out a three-point victory over the Blue Streaks, 60-63. Saratoga had two of the top four runners in the race, but Shen’s pack mentality proved to be the deciding factor.

SCHENECTADY – How “sweep” it was for the Shaker boys and girls cross country teams at this year’s Grout Run Saturday, Oct. 6, at Schenectady’s Central Park.
The Shaker girls fended off Bethlehem 34-42 for the Varsity Division I championship, while the Shaker boys eased past Schenectady 26-54 in the Varsity Division II race.

SOUTH GLENS FALLS – Shaker claimed first place in the Girls Varsity division, and Saranac Lake won the boys division title at the South Glens Falls Killian Invitational Saturday, Sept. 29.
