Scenes from Section 2 Class B boys basketball: Watervliet advances to semis with victory over Mechanicville

Updated at 7:45 p.m. to reflect proper results of Fonda-Fultonville game against Catskill.

CLIFTON PARK – No. 3 Watervliet jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and pulled away for a 74-57 victory over No. 11 Mechanicville in the Section 2 Class B boys basketball quarterfinals Friday, Feb. 22, at Shenendehowa High School.

Messiah Mallory poured in 21 points, and Khari Croley contributed 19 points for Watervliet, which faces No. 2 Glens Falls in the Class B semifinals Monday, Feb. 25, at Cool Insuring Arena. Derrick Beason chipped in with 14 points for the Cannoneers.

Scenes from Section 2 Class B playoffs: Watervliet cruises past Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons

No. 3 Watervliet jumped out to a 23-14 lead in the first quarter and kept its foot on the gas pedal on its way to a 101-56 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons Tuesday, Feb. 19, in a Section 2 Class B boys basketball playoff game.

Five Cannoneers reached double digits in the scoring column, led by Messiah Mallory’s 21-point performance. J.J. Chestnut and Khari Croley each contributed 19 points, and Derrick Beason added 16 points.

Boys basketball: Schalmont, Mekeel Christian, Shaker and Albany Academy post wins at North-South Classic

ALBANY – Schalmont, Mekeel Christian, Shaker and Albany Academy won their games at Saturday’s ZG Slam North South Classic at the Washington Avenue Armory.

Schalmont kicked off the first day of the event with a 63-40 victory over Colonial Council rival Cobleskill-Richmondville. The Bulldogs hung with the Sabres through the first quarter, but Schalmont pulled away with a 13-4 run in the second quarter and a 22-6 spurt in the third quarter.

Shane O’Dell poured in 25 points to lead Schalmont. LJ Randle contributed 11 points, and Gannon Strube added 10 points. Donovan Pacatte got into early foul trouble for Cobleskill-Richmondville and was limited to 10 points. Colonial Council boys basketball: Watervliet hangs on to defeat LaSalle

Watervliet fended off a fourth quarter rally to defeat LaSalle 69-60 Tuesday, Jan. 15, in a Colonial Council boys basketball game.

The Cannoneers went on a 22-10 run in the second quarter to take 34-26 halftime lead against the Cadets. Watervliet extended its advantage to 14 points in the third quarter before LaSalle made a late push to trim the deficit to under double digits.

J.J. Chestnut poured in 23 points, and Khari Croley contributed 20 points for Watervliet. Connor Cepiel netted 14 points, Andrew Vanroy chipped in with 13 points and Jimyh Evans added 12 points for LaSalle. Continue reading “Colonial Council boys basketball: Watervliet hangs on to defeat LaSalle”

Colonial Council boys basketball: Mohonasen dominates second quarter in victory over Catholic Central

Mohonasen outscored Catholic Central 23-9 in the second quarter to take control on its way to a 66-50 home victory Friday, Jan. 11, in a Colonial Council boys basketball game.

Duncan Tallman led four Mohonasen players in double digits with 15 points. Nicholas Richmond had 13 points, Shawn Gillisslee contributed 12 points and Logan Calkins added 10 points for the Mighty Warriors.
