Several Section 2 players were first-team selections in their respective classes on this year’s New York State Sportswriters Association All-State softball team.
Shenendehowa outfielder Emily Carroll (Class AA), Ballston Spa’s Lauren Kersch and Angelina Stile (Class A), South Glens Falls’ Leah Vanderwarker (Class A), Ichabod Crane’s Bella Milazzo and Gabbie Cox (Class B), Lake George pitcher Tyler Bergman (Class C), Chatham pitcher Jenna Skype (Class C), Whitehall pitcher Madison Gould (Class D) and Fort Ann pitcher Kayla Bailey (Class D) earned first-team honors.

No. 8 Mekeel Christian Academy and No. 7 Whitehall advanced to the Section 2 Class D girls soccer quarterfinals with opening round victories Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Mekeel Christian dispatched No. 9 Heatly 6-2 at Maalwyck Park in Scotia. Michaela Van Slyck recorded a hat trick and an assist for the Lions, while Mia Biscossi, Bella Biscossi and Madison Show all adding goals. Bella Biscossi also had an assist, as did Bella Harrigan, Olivia Bowman and Jo Galarneau. Lake George remained undefeated with a 4-2 victory over Salem Tuesday, Sept. 18, in an Adirondack League girls soccer game.
The Warriors – ranked No. 5 in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association girls soccer poll – launched 48 shots on goal against the Generals, but had difficulty getting them past Salem goalkeeper Kathryn Sweenor, who made 21 saves. Outlook for season: Despite losing three players to graduation, Hunt said the Railroaders are looking to rise in the Adirondack League standings.
“This team is made up of three seniors, no juniors, nine sophomores, five freshmen and one eighth grader,” said Hunt/ “[We’re] very young, but [we] have played a lot together and have varsity experience from last year.”
