Joseph Girard III tops All-State basketball list in Class B

Glens Falls superstar Joseph Girard III was named the Class B Player of the Year when the New York State Sportswriters Association revealed its boys basketball all-state teams in Class B, Class C and Class D this week.

The Syracuse University-bound senior guard capped his record-breaking career by averaging 48.7 points per game and guiding the Indians to the state and Federation championships. Girard scored more than 4,000 points in his career, easily eclipsing the previous state record by more than 1,300 points.

Twenty-eight Section 2 players received All-State team honors. They are as follows:

Scenes from Section 2 Class C boys basketball: Top-seeded Lake George cruises past Schoharie

TROY – No. 1 Lake George won its 50th consecutive game with ease, as the Warriors cruised past No. 8 Schoharie 77-31 Friday, Feb. 22, at Hudson Valley Community College.

Connor Vidnansky got things going for Lake George with 11 points in the first quarter, nine of which came on three-pointers. From there, the inside duo of Chris Becker and Mason Flatley did their work, as they combined for 34 points to lead the way. Becker finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Flatley and Vidnansky each contributed 15 points.

Joshua Scheuer netted 12 points for Schoharie, which made 22.2 percent of its shots from the field. Skylar Jankowski led the defensive effort with 10 rebounds and added three assists on offense. Section 2 Class C boys basketball playoffs: Home teams sweep opening round games

All eight home teams won their Section 2 Class C boys basketball playoff games Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Top-seeded Lake George had little trouble with No. 16 Cambridge, as the Warriors prevailed 105-53. New York’s top-ranked Class C squad jumped out to a 35-3 lead in the first quarter, and it never looked back in advancing to the quarterfinals.

Mason Flatley poured in 28 points, and Chris Becker contributed 21 points for Lake George, which extended its state-best winning streak to 49 games. Ben Epler had 20 points, and Brian Hall added 17 points for Cambridge.

Up next for Lake George is Friday’s quarterfinal game against No. 8 Schoharie at Hudson Valley Community College after Schoharie edged No. 9 Stillwater 53-51. Shane Helmstadt scored 18 points for Schoharie, which built an 18-9 lead in the first quarter and fended off a Stillwater rally in the second half.

Brian McNeil netted 20 points, and James Galarneau added 12 points for Stillwater.

No. 4 Chatham and No. 5 Mayfield also advanced with opening round wins Tuesday. Chatham defeated No. 13 Fort Plain 64-46, while Mayfield eased past No. 12 Greenwich 57-37. Continue reading “Section 2 Class C boys basketball playoffs: Home teams sweep opening round games”

Scenes from the ZG Slam North-South Classic, Day 2

GLENS FALLS – The second day of the Zero Gravity Slam North-South Classic boys basketball showcase took place Sunday, Jan. 27, at Cool Insuring Arena.

The highlight was reserved for the final game of the day-long showcase, as Glens Falls’ Joseph Girard III pursued another milestone against Foothills Council rival. Girard scored his 4,000th career point on a free throw in the third quarter as part of a 52-point performance in the Indians’ 78-74 victory over the Running Rams.

Two other major match-ups fell a bit short of generating much in the way of suspense. Albany Academy downed Park School of Buffalo 67-44 in a showdown between the state’s top two-ranked Class A teams, and Lake George stormed out to an 18-7 lead on its way to a 55-30 victory over Hoosick Falls in a battle between the state’s No. 1 and No. 4-ranked Class C squads. Boys basketball: Tamarac defeats New Lebanon to clinch first winning season in 10 years

The Tamarac boys basketball team locked up its first winning season since 2009 with a 64-44 non-league victory against New Lebanon Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Anthony Ciampolillo and Frank Zotto each scored 17 points to lead the Bengals (11-3), who pulled away from the Tigers with a 21-9 run in the second quarter. Cole Erickson had 14 points, and Clayton Erickson contributed 13 points for New Lebanon.

Elsewhere, Duncan Tallman became Mohonasen’s all-time scoring leader as the Mighty Warriors defeated Schenectady 71-63. Tallman scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter lead Mohonasen to victory and surpass Phil DeCarlo atop the school’s leaderboard with 1,274 points.

Shawn Gillisslee chipped in with 16 points, and Chase Monroe added 15 points for Mohonasen, which overcame a slow start to build a 33-30 halftime lead. Elijah Johnsen had 15 points for Schenectady. Adirondack League boys basketball preview: Lake George Warriors

Team: Lake George

Playoff result: Adirondack League, Section 2, regional and Class C state champions

Returning starters: Mason Flatley (forward/guard), Chris Becker (center)

Graduated: Alex Jones (point guard), Calab Scrime (forward)

Newcomers: Alex Leonelli (point guard), Colin Leonelli, Luke Pelchar (forward/center), Connor Vidnansky (shooting guard)

Outlook for season: Lake George lost its leading scorer (Scrime) and its starting point guard (Jones) to graduation, but the Warriors have two strong scorers returning in Flatley and Becker, who each averaged 15 points per game, plus a promising shooting guard in Vidnansky.

“The culture here is to win league titles and Sectionals, which is our goal again this season,” said White. “With the core being the two big men inside [Flatley and Becker], we feel with the new starters, we will have a balanced unit.”

Scenes from Section 2 boys soccer playoffs: Maple Hill edges Lake George in Class C final

TROY – Maple Hill won its third consecutive Section 2 Class C boys soccer title by upending previously undefeated Lake George 1-0 Monday, Oct. 29, at LaSalle Institute.

Christian Beber slotted Gabe Ellis’ direct kick past the outstretched fingers of Lake George goalkeeper Mason Flatley late in the first half to give Maple Hill the lead. From there, the Wildcats defense held firm to deny the Warriors – the state’s No. 1-ranked Class C team – any quality scoring chances.

The victory closed out a strong defensive performance by Maple Hill in Sectionals. The Wildcats did not allow a goal in four playoff games, including against a Lake George squad that had scored 100 goals during its run to the final.

Maple Hill advances to Thursday’s regional against Section 10 champion Madrid-Waddington at Potsdam High School. The winner of that game faces Section 7 champion Seton Catholic of Plattsburgh Saturday at Plattsburgh High School. Scenes from Section 2 boys soccer playoffs: Lake George edges Mayfield to reach Class C final against Maple Hill

ROTTERDAM – Top-seeded Lake George fended off No. 4 Mayfield 1-0 in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer semifinals Thursday, Oct. 25, at Mohonasen High School.

Phillip Shambo scored off a rebound in the 24th minute to give the Warriors their lead. Mayfield stormed back with a barrage of shots in the second half, but goalie Mason Flatley made several key saves to preserve the shutout.

Lake George advances to the Class C final, where it will meet No. 2 Maple Hill Monday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. at Colonie Central High School. Maple Hill got past No. 3 Stillwater 1-0 in the semifinals on a goal by Seth Roberts off Christian Beber’s corner kick in the first half. Section 2 Class C boys soccer: Top four seeds advance to semifinals

The top four seeds in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs advanced to the semifinal round with quarterfinal victories Monday, Oct. 22.

No. 1 Lake George (18-0-0) got past No. 8 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 3-1, as Alex Leonelli, Ethan Knauf and Justin Blanco tallied for the Warriors. Lake George goalkeeper Mason Flatley had several saves, including a key stop late in the second half. Wil Lawson notched Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons’ goal.
