Bethlehem sweeps Section 2 hockey postseason awards

Capital District High School Hockey League regular season champion Bethlehem swept the top three awards when Section 2 announced its postseason all-stars Sunday, Feb. 16.

Forward Michael Bievenue won the scoring title and was named Section 2’s Player of the Year, while Michael Kurdziolek was chosen by Section 2 coaches as the Leading Goaltender. Bievenue scored 46 goals and finished with 68 points, while Kurdziolek posted a 12-2-1 record with a 2.20 goals against average and a league-leading .919 save percentage.

Kurdziolek, forward Justin Chenaille and defenseman John Thibodeau from Bethlehem were named to the All-Section 2 team, along with Albany Academy forward Anthony Sericolo, Christian Brothers Academy forward Hunter Pemrick and Queensbury defenseman Brayden Ordway.

Chenaille led the league in assists with 31 and was second to Bievenue in goals (24) and points (55), while Thibodeau topped the league in assists by a defenseman with 16. Sericolo tied Shenendehowa’s Brennan Alheim for fourth place in points with 36, while Pemrick posted 24 points for the Brothers. CDHSHL: Michael Bievenue adds to his scoring lead in Bethlehem’s victory

Michael Bievenue continues to light the lamp at a high rate.

The Bethlehem junior forward scored six goals and added an assist to lead the Eagles to a 12-2 victory over the Capital District Jets Wednesday, Feb. 6, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Bethlehem Area YMCA.

It was the second consecutive six-goal game for Bievenue, who now leads the CDHSHL with 45 goals and 67 points. Bievenue has scored at least two goals in seven of his last eight games and has registered hat tricks six times during this most recent stretch of games. CDHSHL: Michael Bievenue scores six goals in Bethlehem’s victory over Albany Academy

Bethlehem’s Michael Bievenue could not be stopped as he led the Eagles to a 7-2 victory over Albany Academy Friday, Feb. 1, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Albany Academy Fieldhouse.

Bievenue scorched the nets for six goals to raise his Section 2-leading goal total to 39 for the season. Justin Chenaille contributed a goal and three assists, while Ben LaVigne, William Bievenue and Connor Carroll all added a pair of assists. Goalie Michael Kurdziolek stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced to earn the victory.

CDHSHL: Queensbury tops Capital District, despite 51 saves by Philip Ryan

Queensbury struck four times in the first period on its way to a 5-1 victory over the Capital District Jets Wednesday, Jan. 30, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Glens Falls Recreational Center.

Jimmy Fitzgerald, Casey Moulthrop and Jack Randall tallied within the first five minutes of the game to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Capital District goalie Philip Ryan did what he could to keep the Jets in the contest by making 51 saves, but the offense didn’t come around until the third period, when it generated 10 of the 24 total shots on goal they had.

Mason Wildermuth added a goal and two assists for Queensbury (6-3-1 league, 10-5-1 overall), while Randall and Trevor Vogel each had a goal and an assist. Scenes from the CDHSHL: Michael Bievenue’s hat trick leads Bethlehem past CBA

DELMAR – Michael Bievenue continues to be an unstoppable force of nature for the Bethlehem hockey team.

The junior recorded his fourth hat trick in his last five games and his seventh of the season in the Eagles 5-1 victory over Christian Brothers Academy Friday, Jan. 25, on “Big Orange Freakout” night at the Bethlehem Area YMCA.

“My linemates have been incredible,” said Bievenue, who leads the Capital District High School Hockey League with 31 goals and 52 points. “They helped me get these hat tricks. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

“Bievenue has by far is very talented with a very good work ethic, and when he combines that with his effort, it’s a sight to see,” said Bethlehem head coach Dylan Lappe. “I’m blessed to have him for another year.”

Bievenue got Bethlehem (9-2-0 league, 14-2-0 overall) on the scoreboard early in the first period with a power play goal. Justin Chenaille’s original shot was stopped by CBA goaltender Josh Coburn, but Bievenue was positioned perfectly between the face-off cicles to rifle home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

Bethlehem fished for a couple more goals while killing penalties in the first period. Chenaille poke-checked the puck away from a CBA player and had an open shot on goal that Coburn knocked aside. Later on, Carroll stole the puck and skated in on Coburn, but the junior stopped that shot to keep the score 1-0 going into the first intermission. Capital District High School Hockey League: Shenendehowa strikes three times in third period to top Queensbury

Shenendehowa scored three goals in the third period to defeat Queensbury 5-2 Friday, Jan. 18, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Clifton Park Arena.

Brennan Alheim and Cole Haldane each had a pair of goals and an assist for the Plainsmen (5-2-0 league, 9-4-1 overall). Goalie Kent Leighton stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced.

Capital District High School Hockey League: Bethlehem skates past Capital District

Bethlehem moved back into first place with an 8-3 victory over the Capital District Jets in a Capital District High School Hockey League game Friday, Jan. 11, at the Albany County Hockey Facility in Colonie.

The Eagles (6-2-0 league, 11-2-0 overall) scored the first three goals of the game and then used Michael Bievenue’s four-goal run in the third period to put the game out of Capital District’s reach.

Connor Carroll contributed two goals and three assists for Bethlehem, which moved one standings point ahead of Albany Academy for first place. Scenes from the Bethlehem Holiday Classic hockey tournament

Michael Bievenue’s goal late in the second period proved to be the game winner for Bethlehem in a 7-3 victory over Cicero-North Syracuse (Section 3) in the first day of the Bethlehem Winter Classic hockey tournament Friday, Dec. 28, at the Bethlehem Area YMCA.

Bievenue and Jonathan Thibodeau tallied two goals apiece for the Eagles (8-1-0), who pulled away from the North Stars with three unanswered goals late in the third period. Connor Carroll contributed a goal and an assist, and goaltender Michael Kurdziolek made 13 saves for the victory.

Section 2 hockey weekend report: Bethlehem rolls along; CBA gains steam with victory over LaSalle

Bethlehem continues to lead the way in the Capital District High School Hockey League following a 6-3 victory over Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany Saturday, Dec. 8, at Union College.

It was the third consecutive 6-3 victory by the Eagles (3-0-0 league, 6-0-0 overall) and the fifth time they have tallied at least six times in a game. The only team to hold Bethlehem under six goals was West Genesee (Section 3) in a game won by the Eagles 3-1.

Michael Bievenue continued his torrid start for Bethlehem by factoring into all six goals the Eagles scored against Niskayuna/Schenectady/Albany. The junior forward notched four goals and assisted on the other two to finish with a six-point evening. For the season, Bievenue has 12 goals and 10 assists for a CDHSHL-best 22 points. Scenes from Section 2 hockey: Capital District Jets host annual Thanksgiving Tournament

COLONIE – The Section 2 hockey season officially began this weekend with the annual Capital District Jets Thanksgiving Tournament Nov. 23 and 24 at the Albany County Hockey Facility.

Defending Section 2 Division 1 champion Bethlehem picked up where it left off by posting a pair of convincing wins to take the tournament title. The Eagles defeated Mamaroneck (Section 1) 6-1 Friday and posted a 12-0 victory over The Storm – a team comprised of players from Guilderland, Mohonasen, Scotia-Glenville, Voorheesville and Schalmont – Saturday.
