Western Athletic Conference announces its boys soccer MVPs and all-star teams

The Western Athletic Conference announced its Division 1 and Division 2 most valuable players and all-star boys soccer teams Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons senior Wil Lawson was named the Division 1 MVP, while Oppenheim-Ephretah-St. Johnsville’s Jack Brundage received the Division 2 MVP honor. Lawson led NDBG with 29 goals and 10 assists, while Brundage posted 32 goals and seven assists for OESJ.

Mayfield’s Evan Lehr was selected by the WAC coaches as the Division 1 Goalkeeper of the Year, while Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Duanesburg’s Tyler Goodemote was chosen as the Division 2 Goalie of the Year.

Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs: Catholic Central, Schoharie among teams advancing past preliminary round

No. 17 Catholic Central and No. 13 Schoharie were among six teams advancing through the preliminary round of the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Lucas Kania had a hat trick to lead Catholic Central (5-12-0) to a 7-1 victory over No. 16 Saratoga Central Catholic. Liam McDonald contributed a pair of goals, and Joe Piperata added a goal and two assists for the Crusaders, who will meet top-seeded Lake George Thursday, Oct. 18.

Western Athletic Conference boys soccer: Schoharie rallies to tie Galway in home game played on the road

Due to poor field conditions, Schoharie’s home game against Galway Saturday, Oct. 13, was moved to Galway High School, with the Indians remaining the “home team.”

Schoharie then overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie Galway 2-2 in their Western Athletic Conference boys soccer season finale.

Derek Dietz tallied 40 seconds into the second half, and Noah Fagnani scored less than six minutes later to pull Schoharie even. The two teams remained tied through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods thanks in large part to Galway goalkeeper Henry Flint, who made several saves.

Flint finished with 12 stops for the Golden Eagles, while Daryl Conor and Anthony Powers scored Galway’s goals.

Western Athletic Conference boys soccer: Schoharie doubles up Canajoharie

CANAJOHARIE – Noah Fagnani recorded a hat trick to lead Schoharie to a 6-3 victory over Canajoharie Thursday, Oct. 11, in a Western Athletic Conference boys soccer game.

Jacob Nowalk gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the first half, but Nathaniel Simmons headed in a corner kick and Daniel Bernhardt knocked in a rebound off a shot off the goal post to put the Indians ahead 2-1 by halftime.

Fagnani scored all three of his goals in the second half, as Schoharie pulled away for the victory. Skyler Jankowski added a goal for the Indians, while Nowalk and Braden Greenslete tallied for Canajoharie.

Schoharie goalkeeper Bailey Smart made seven saves, while Canajoharie netminder Jared Bentz stopped 13 shots.

Western Athletic Conference boys soccer: Schoharie pulls away from Fonda-Fultonville at the end

Schoharie scored twice in the final five minutes to pull out a 4-2 victory over Fonda-Fultonville Wednesday, Oct. 10, in a Western Athletic Conference boys soccer game.

Noah Fagnani notched the go-ahead goal for the visiting Indians, and Derek Dietz added an insurance goal. Goalkeeper Mitch Araya, who swapped into the field, headed in the tying goal for the Braves midway through the second half.

Skyler Jankowski and Quin Barton also tallied for Schoharie, and goalie Bailey Smart stopped six shots. Tyler Sweet scored a first-half goal for Fonda-Fultonville.

Kyle Sharpe Tournament: Delaware Academy edges Amsterdam for title; Schoharie defeats Fonda-Fultonville

SCHOHARIE – Delaware Academy of Delhi, NY, defeated Amsterdam 1-0 in the finals of the Kyle Sharpe Boys Soccer Tournament Saturday, Oct. 6, at Schoharie High School.

Logan Aikens scored in the final two minutes of the first half to give Delaware Academy (9-3-1) the lead. Amsterdam put together a few scoring chances in the game, but goalkeeper Logan Bryan made five saves to earn the shutout. Western Athletic Conference boys soccer: Mayfield doubles up Schoharie

Daniel Leach recorded a hat trick to lead Mayfield past Schoharie 4-2 Friday, Oct. 5, in a Western Athletic Conference boys soccer game at Gloversville High School.

Western Athletic Conference boys soccer: Schoharie defeats Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Duaneburg

The Schoharie boys soccer team prevailed over another one of its Western Athletic Conference neighbors, as the Indians defeated Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Duanesburg 3-1 Wednesday, Sept. 26, in Schoharie.

Schoharie took a 1-0 lead on Noah Fagnani’s goal 15 minutes into the first half, but BKW/Duanesburg tied the score five minutes before halftime. Derek Dietz tallied off a feed from Fagnani to put the Indians in front again, and Skyler Jankowski tapped home a shot late in the second half for an insurance goal.

Schoharie pulled away in the second half for a 6-2 victory over Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons Monday, Sept. 24, in a Western Athletic Conference boys soccer game.

The game was clouded by a injury suffered by ND-BG goalkeeper Cole Nelson when he hit his head against the far post while stopping a Schoharie shot in the second half. The Indians struck for two insurance goals following Nelson’s injury to create their margin of victory. Western Athletic Conference boys soccer: Schoharie defeats Northville in Route 30 battle

Schoharie traveled north on Route 30 to Northville Wednesday, Sept. 19, and defeated the Falcons 4-1 in a Western Athletic Conference boys soccer game.

Derek Dietz jumpstarted Schoharie’s offense with a pair of early goals. Noah Fagnani added a goal before halftime to increase the Indians’ lead to 3-0.

Nate Reidell tallied in the second half to draw Northville within two goals of the lead, but Fagnani struck again off a set piece to put Schoharie up 4-1. The Indians continued to apply pressure on the Falcons’ defense, but goalkeeper Chase Wood made several saves to prevent any further damage.

Wood finished with 10 saves for Northville, while Schoharie goalie Bailey Smart stopped eight shots.
