Scenes from boys basketball regionals: OESJ surges past Wells to reach state tournament

TROY – After struggling to shut down Wells in the first half, Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville turned up the defensive pressure to pull out a 57-40 victory in the Class D boys basketball regional final Saturday, March 9, at Hudson Valley Community College.

The Wolfpack will join Troy (Class A), Glens Falls (Class B) and Lake George (Class C) in heading to Binghamton for next weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.

Section 2 boys basketball semifinals: Gloversville advances past Mohonasen in Class A semifinals

GLENS FALLS – No. 2 Gloversville overcame a slow start to defeat No. 6 Mohonasen 50-41 in the Section 2 Class A boys basketball semifinals Thursday, Feb. 28, at Cool Insuring Arena.

The defending champion Mighty Warriors jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter, but the Dragons responded by outscoring Mohonasen 32-19 over the course of the second and third quarters to take control.

Dante Bouchard had 21 points, and Joey Rowback contributed 13 points for Gloversville. Duncan Tallman and Chase Monroe each scored 10 points for Mohonasen.

Gloversville faces No. 1 Troy in Saturday’s Class A final. The Flying Horses dispatched No. 4 Mekeel Christian Academy 74-61 in Thursday’s other semifinal contest.

Latyce Faison and Nazaire Merritt each scored 19 points for Troy, which built a 36-24 halftime lead against the defending state Class B champions from Mekeel Christian. Faison also contributed five assists, and Zaveon Little added 14 points.

Non-league boys basketball: Mohonasen cruises past Guilderland in rivalry game

Mohonasen and Guilderland used to be neighboring Suburban Council rivals until Mohonasen moved to the Colonial Council this season.

The boys basketball teams from the two schools kept their rivalry going this season, with Mohonasen getting the better of Guilderland 77-41 Saturday, Jan. 5.

Guilderland kept the game close through the first quarter, but Mohonasen used a 22-7 run in the second quarter to build a 37-17 halftime lead. The Mighty Warriors continued their onslaught with a 24-point third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Duncan Tallman sank six three-pointers on his way to a 28-point afternoon for Mohonasen. Chase Monroe contributed 17 points, while Nicholas Richmond, Drew Coelho and Shawn Gillisslee all added eight points.

Western Athletic Conference boys basketball: Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons earns victory over OESJ

SCHENECTADY – Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons outscored Oppenheim-Ephretah/St. Johnsville 20-13 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 58-46 victory Tuesday, Dec. 4, in a Western Athletic Conference boys basketball game.

The Golden Knights overcame a sluggish start to build a 23-19 halftime lead against the Wolfpack. OESJ remained within striking distance in the third quarter before running out of gas down the stretch.
