Section 2 Class B girls basketball playoffs: Fonda-Fultonville continues its run with victory over Schalmont

No. 13 Fonda-Fultonville’s playoff ride will carry into the Section 2 Class B girls basketball semifinals following a 55-39 quarterfinal victory over No. 5 Schalmont Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Tamarac High School.

After clinging to a two-point halftime lead, the Braves gradually pulled away from the Sabres to advance into Tuesday’s semifinal against top-seeded Tamarac, which fended off Hudson 52-47.

Abigail Lombardoni made four three-pointers and finished with 27 points for Fonda-Fultonville, while Lyndsay Lombardoni contributed 10 points. Payton Graber netted 26 points for Schalmont.

The Tamarac-Hudson quarterfinal game was billed as a battle between two of Class B’s top players – Tamarac’s Emily Erickson and Hudson’s Deja Beauford. However, it was Tamarac’s supporting cast that made the difference, as the Bengals had nine players enter the scoring column to Hudson’s seven players. Colonial Council girls basketball: Cohoes rallies to defeat Cobleskill-Richmondville in overtime

Cohoes outscored Cobleskill-Richmondville 9-3 in overtime to pull out a 54-48 victory in a Colonial Council girls basketball game Friday, Feb. 1.

Trailing 23-19 at halftime, Cohoes pulled even by outscoring Cobleskill-Richmondville 26-22 in the second half. Olivia Huneau led the Tigers’ charge with 18 points, while Maggie Saunders contributed 12 points.

In other Colonial Council action. Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk cruised past Albany Academy for Girls 58-31 behind Lauren Sanderson’s 19 points. Aaliyah Juste scored nine points for Albany Academy. Colonial Council girls basketball: A strong start and a strong finish propel Albany Academy past Watervliet

Albany Academy for Girls used an 11-3 run in the first quarter and a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to defeat Watervliet 39-31 Friday, Jan. 25, in a Colonial Council basketball game.

Mianna Jackson and Meleena Ottati each scored 11 points for the Bears. Amia Maldonado led the Cannoneers with nine points.

In other Colonial Council action, Voorheesville posted a 52-47 victory over Cobleskill-Richmondville. Lily Zanello had 13 points, and Olivia Barringer contributed 12 points for the Blackbirds. Colonial Council girls basketball: Payton Graber’s big night leads Schalmont past Voorheesville

Payton Graber could not be stopped, as she poured in 40 points to lead Schalmont to a 53-42 victory over Voorheesville Friday, Jan. 11, in a Colonial Council girls basketball game.

Graber made five three-pointers for the Sabres, who used a 22-5 run in the third quarter to take control. Graber also made 11 of her 13 free throws.

Whitehall girls basketball defeats Saratoga Central Catholic in defensive battle

Defense was the name of the game Friday, Dec. 21, as Whitehall defeated Saratoga Central Catholic 34-24 in a non-league girls basketball contest.

After a sluggish first quarter, Whitehall outscored Saratoga Catholic 13-7 in the second quarter to grab the lead. Both teams continued to struggle getting shots to fall in the second half, but the Railroaders pulled away at the end for the 10-point victory.

Colonial Council girls soccer coaches name Ava Panto Player of the Year

Academy of the Holy Names junior Ava Panto was named the Player of the Year when the Colonial Council announced its girls soccer all-stars Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Panto scored a team-high 38 goals and added eight assists to help Holy Names win the Colonial Council Liberty Division and the Section 2 Class B titles.

Four more Holy Names players – Megan Marini, Bella Tronco, Marissa DeMartino and Grace Field – were named first team all-stars.
