Queensbury, Schalmont boys soccer teams fall in state semifinals

MIDDLETOWN – Queensbury and Schalmont fell in the semifinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys soccer tournament Saturday, Nov. 10.

Queensbury, which entered as the top-ranked Class A team in the state, lost to Somers (Section 1) 2-1 in its semifinal contest. Lucas Fecci and John Riina scored for Somers, while Aidan Jordi-Donnelly had a second-half goal for Queensbury.

Schalmont fell to Section 3 champion Westhil 3-1 in the Class B semifinals. Mark Etoll, Jack Grooms and Braden Krzykowski notched goals for Westhill, while Devin Renaud tallied for Schalmont.

Boys soccer: NYSPHSAA switches site for Class A semifinals

With heavy rain in the forecast for Middletown Friday night, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association has moved the site of the Class A boys soccer semifinals.

Section 2 champion Queensbury will meet Section 1 champion Somers Saturday, Nov. 10, at 12:30 p.m. at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. The winner of that contest will play either Brighton (Section 5) or Amityville (Section 11) in the finals Sunday, Nov. 11, at 8:30 a.m. at Middletown High School’s turf field. The semifinals were scheduled to be played at one of the grass fields at the Middletown school district complex.

There is no change to the Class B schedule. Section 2 champion Schalmont meets Section 3 representative Westhill Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Middletown High School turf field. The winner advances to the finals Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against either East Aurora (Section 6) or Briarcliff (Section 1).

Boys soccer regionals: Schalmont advances on penalty kicks; Queensbury defeats Fulton

Schalmont (Class B) and Queensbury (Class A) will represent Section 2 at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer Tournament this weekend in Middletown after they won regional titles Saturday, Nov. 3.

Schalmont tied Section 7’s Peru 2-2 in their regional, but punched its ticket to the state semifinals by edging Peru 4-3 in penalty kicks. Jared Smith hit the go-ahead penalty kick for the Sabres, and goalkeeper Ryan Taylor made a diving block with his feet on Tanner Spear’s attempt to end the session.

Peru scored twice in the first 14 minutes to take an early lead on Schalmont, but Ryan Edwards tallied with less than 17 minutes left in the first half to trim the deficit to 2-1. Scenes from Section 2 boys soccer playoffs: Schalmont rallies past Ichabod Crane for Class B title

TROY – Schalmont overcame a 3-0 deficit with 24:20 left in regulation to edge Colonial Council rival Ichabod Crane 4-3 in overtime to win the Section 2 Class B boys soccer title Monday, Oct. 29, at LaSalle Institute.

Hamza Noor’s shot deflected off the crossbar and just over the goal line in the first 15-minute overtime period to propel the top-seeded Sabres to the Sectional title and a berth in Thursday’s regional against Section 10 champion Canton at Potsdam High School.

Gio Gomez recorded a hat trick for Ichabod Crane. Gomez scored his first goal 14 minutes into the first half and then struck twice in the second half to give the Riders a 3-0 advantage over a Schalmont team that defeated them twice during the regular season.

Devin Renard headed Zach Metzold’s shot into the goal to get Schalmont on the scoreboard. Ryan Edwards tallied less than 90 seconds later when he knocked in Gabe Comenzo’s pass to trim the deficit to 3-2. Then, Renard scored again with 1:19 left in regulation to tie the game at 3-3. Scenes from Section 2 boys soccer playoffs: Ichabod Crane edges Schuylerville in overtime to win semifinal

ROTTERDAM – Anthony Carlucci’s second goal of the evening helped No. 2 Ichabod Crane rally for a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 3 Schuylerville in the Section 2 Class B boys soccer semifinals at Mohonasen High School.

Carlucci tied the score at 2-2 late in the second half when his direct kick sailed into the upper corner of the Schuylerville goal. Then with three minutes left in the first overtime period, Carlucci eluded the Schuylerville defense and fired a shot into the net for the game winner.

Joe Dolan headed in Edgar Gomez’s corner kick with less than 16 minutes left in the first half to give the Riders a 1-0 lead. Mike Lanfear tallied early in the second half and assisted on Christian Petralia’s goal that put the Black Horses ahead 2-1. Scenes from Section 2 boys soccer playoffs: Schalmont gets past Cobleskill-Richmondville in Class B

ROTTERDAM – Top-seeded Schalmont edged Colonial Council rival Cobleskill-Richmondville 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Section 2 Class B boys soccer playoffs Friday, Oct. 19.

Dylan Martin scored the game’s lone goal in the first half, and goalkeeper Ryan Taylor stopped five shots for the Sabres, who advance to face No. 4 Mechanicville in the semifinals Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Mohonasen High School.

Section 2 Class B boys soccer playoffs: Schalmont, Ichabod Crane among first round winners

Quarterfinal match-ups are now set in Class B, as eight boys soccer teams advanced to the next round of the Section 2 playoffs Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Top-seeded Schalmont (14-1-2) shut out Colonial Council rival Cohoes 4-0 in Rotterdam. Dom Scalice tallied twice for the Sabres, who shook off a slow start to pull away with three second-half goals. Zach Metzold and Dylan Martin also scored goals.

Colonial Council boys soccer: Schalmont holds on for victory over Ichabod Crane

VALATIE – Schalmont swept its two-game season series with Ichabod Crane by edging the Riders 3-2 Saturday, Oct. 13, in its Colonial Council boys soccer season finale.

Ryan Edwards had a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Dylan Martin and Gabe Comenzo also tallied for Schalmont, and goalkeeper Ryan Taylor had six saves.

Anthony Carlucci scored two goals in the second half to lead Ichabod Crane’s rally. Goalie Spencer Bates made three saves.

Colonial Council boys soccer: Schalmont does not need overtime on Senior Night

After playing four consecutive overtime contests, Schalmont cruised to a 5-0 Senior Night victory over Lansingburgh Tuesday, Oct. 9, in a Colonial Council boys soccer game.

Underclassment led the way for the Sabres (12-1-2). Hamza Noor scored seven minutes into the contest off a rebound, and freshman Drew Kuzek tallied off a feed from Matt Horwedel to give Schalmont a 2-0 lead at the half.

Sophomore Ryan Edwards buried a tough-angle shot into the upper corner of the net 13 minutes into the second half to put Schalmont ahead 3-0. Noor tallied 30 seconds later off a pass from Edwards, and Kusek added his second goal of the evening later in the half to finish the scoring.

Goalkeeper Grant Laustrup had 11 saves for Lansingburgh.

Colonial Council boys soccer: Catholic Central squeaks past Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk; Mohonasen and Schalmont play to a scoreless tie

Catholic Central hung on for a 3-2 victory over Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk in a Colonial Council boys soccer game Friday, Oct. 5, in Troy.

Lucas Kania and Liam McDonald each had a goal and an assist to lead the Crusaders’ balanced attack. Joe Piperata also scored for Catholic Central, and goalkeeper Noah Miller made two saves.

Bryan Schwabrow tallied for RCS, and goalie Shane Racey stopped seven shots.

Elsewhere in the Colonial Council, Mohonasen and Schalmont played to another scoreless tie. Mohonasen goalie Tyson Hallberg stopped four shots, while Schalmont netminder Ryan Taylor made five saves.

It was Schalmont’s fourth consecutive overtime game and its second tie during the stretch.
