Academy of the Holy Names junior Ava Panto was named the Player of the Year when the Colonial Council announced its girls soccer all-stars Wednesday, Nov. 7.
Panto scored a team-high 38 goals and added eight assists to help Holy Names win the Colonial Council Liberty Division and the Section 2 Class B titles.
Four more Holy Names players – Megan Marini, Bella Tronco, Marissa DeMartino and Grace Field – were named first team all-stars. STILLWATER – Megan Marini bent a corner kick into the far left side of the Schalmont goal with less than one minute left in the second overtime period to give Academy of the Holy Names a 4-3 victory in the Section 2 Class B girls soccer final Friday, Oct. 26.
Marissa DeMartino headed in a Marini corner kick midway through the first overtime period to put top-seeded Holy Names ahead 3-2, but Teagan Olden tallied three minutes later to knot the score at 3-3 for No. 2 Schalmont.
The Sabres built a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Vanessa Wainwright and Ashley Cirilla. However, Ava Panto struck twice in the second half – both times assisted by Bella Tronco – to pull Holy Names even and force overtime.
Goalkeeper Kathleen Harris made eight saves for Holy Names, which defeated Schalmont for the second time in three meetings this season. Schalmont netminder Eden Messemer had three saves.
Schalmont and Academy of Holy Names will meet for a third time on the soccer pitch this season – this time, for the Section 2 Class B title.
No. 2 Schalmont pulled out a 6-4 victory over No. 3 Voorheesville in one semifinal Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Lansingburgh High School, while top-seeded Holy Names pulled away for a 5-0 victory over No. 4 Mechanicville in the other semifinal.
Sofia Cassano scored two goals and added an assist, and Davia Rossi contributed three assists for Schalmont in its victory over Voorheesville. Five players had multi-goal games for No. 2 Schalmont in a 15-0 victory over No. 15 Corinth in the opening round of the Section 2 Class B girls soccer playoffs Thursday, Oct. 18.
Isabella Amoroso recorded a hat trick and two assists, while Sofia Cassano contributed two goals and two assists for the Sabres (15-1-1), ranked No. 4 among Class B teams in the New York State Sportswriters Association poll. Jules Monlea, Ashley Cirilla and Chloe Schaffer all tallied twice, and Isabella Almodovar added three assists. ROTTERDAM – Eight different players scored goals for Schalmont in a 9-0 victory over Ichabod Crane Thursday, Oct. 11, in a Colonial Council girls soccer game.
Sofia Cassano had two goals and an assist to lead a balanced Sabre attack. Davia Rossi and Jules Monlea each contributed a goal and an assist, while Eden Messemer, Isabella Amoroso, Kasey Dillenbeck, Isabella Almodovar and Teghan Older all added goals. Kelly Sanders, Ashley Cirilla, Sophia Pasquarella and Simone Cassano chipped in with assists.
Cali Ringwood stopped 12 shots on goal for Ichabod Crane.
Ashley Cirilla notched two goals and an assist to lead Schalmont to a 4-0 victory over Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Monday, Oct. 8, in a Colonial Council girls soccer game.
Sofia Cassano contributed a goal and an assist, and Alison Waldron tallied once for the Sabres. Goalkeepers Eden Messemer and Kierstin Lynch stopped a combined total of 14 shots.
Goalie Makenzie Kunkle had 28 saves for Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk.
ROTTERDAM – Two of the top four-ranked Class B girls soccer teams in New York State met for the second time this season.
When all was said and done, Academy of the Holy Names (No. 4) rallied for a 2-1 victory over top-ranked Schalmont Wednesday, Oct. 3, in a Colonial Council contest.
Unlike the first meeting between the two teams – won by Schalmont 4-1 on Sept. 2 (click here for the story and a photo gallery) – Holy Names did not back down after Schalmont took the lead on Ashley Cirilla’s unassisted goal early in the second half. Megan Marini scored the equalizer less than 11 minutes later off a pass from Ava Panto, and Panto notched the game winner off Marini’s assist with 16:46 remaining in regulation.
Holy Names goalkeeper Kathleen Harris stopped 10 shots, while Schalmont netminder Eden Messemer had 10 saves.

Two of the top Class B girls soccer teams in New York State continued their dominance over Colonial Council competition Wednesday, Sept. 26.
Top-ranked Schalmont defeated Cobleskill-Richmondville 10-0, while fifth-ranked Academy of the Holy Names downed Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk 7-0.
Sofia Cassano and Ashley Cirilla each recorded hat tricks to lead Schalmont past Cobleskill-Richmondville. Jules Monlea, Gianna Viscusi and Simone Cassano also tallied for the Sabres.
Goalkeeper Sydney Dymes made 15 saves for Cobleskill-Richmondville.
Holy Names used a balanced attack to defeat RCS. Ava Panto tallied three times, while Suzi Smith, Libby Harris and Megan Marini all contributed a goal and an assist for Holy Names. Sam Germano also scored a goal, while goalies Kathleen Harris and Megan Bell stopped a combined total of four shots for the shutout.
Section 2 girls soccer powers Lake George and Schalmont ventured out of the region Saturday, Sept. 8, to face teams from other parts of New York.
