Section 2 football: A first glance at Class C

We will be taking a look at the alignments and schedules for all five football classes in Section 2 this week. To read about Class D, click here.

Four Class C football programs are on the move to different classes in 2019, while two Class D teams jump in to replace them.

Holy Trinity moves up to Class B this fall after adding players from Bishop Maginn to its roster, which also includes players from Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, Catholic Central and Saratoga Central Catholic. Meanwhile, Chatham and Helderberg Valley slide down to Class D, and Corinth merges with Fort Edward and moves to Class D, where it will be ineligible for the Section 2 playoffs. Section 2 football: Tamarac shuts out Taconic Hills in crossover game

Tamarac defeated Taconic Hills 20-0 Friday, Oct. 19, in a Section 2 Class C football crossover game.

Frank Zotto caught two touchdown passes from Bo Catherwood, and the Tamarac defense returned an interception for a touchdown to earn the victory. The Bengals also recovered a pair of fumbles and intercepted a second pass.

Donovan Mier rushed for 78 yards to lead Taconic Hills’ offense.

Section 2 Class C football: Helderberg Valley pulls away from Taconic Hills

Helderberg Valley made its case for playing in the Section 2 Class C football playoffs with a 31-14 victory over Taconic Hills Friday, Oct. 12.

The win tied Helderberg Valley (4-3 overall) and Catskill-Cairo-Durham for third place in the South Division with a 3-2 record, and it holds the tiebreaker over CCD by virtue of its 46-12 victory on Sept. 8. The top two teams from each of the three divisions automatically qualify for Sectionals, along with two wildcard teams. Scenes from Section 2 Class C football: Holy Trinity shuts out Mechanicville

SCHENECTADY – Ja-Del Whitfield rushed for two touchdowns to lead Holy Trinity to a 23-0 victory over Mechanicville Saturday, Oct. 6, in a Section 2 Class C football game played at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons.

Whitfield capped a first quarter drive with a 1-yard touchdown run and added a 5-yard scoring run in the third quarter to help the Pride (5-1) post their fourth consecutive victory. William Lawson kicked a 27-yard field goal to cap a second-quarter series, and Nelon Priest added a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory. Quarterback Joe Tortello threw for 187 yards for Holy Trinity.

Section 2 Class C football: Taconic Hills edges Coxsackie-Athens

Devon Charron rushed for one touchdown and caught another to help Taconic Hills defeat Coxsackie-Athens 22-12 Friday, Oct. 5, in a Section 2 Class C South Division football game.

Charron carried the ball 17 times for 111 yards, caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Hartman and added a two-point conversion run for the Titans, who led 16-12 at halftime. The Taconic Hills defense also recorded a touchdown on a 95-yard interception return.

Section 2 Class C football: Catskill-Cairo-Durham fends off Taconic Hills rally

Catskill-Cairo-Durham fended off a second-half rally to defeat Taconic Hills 24-14 Saturday, Sept. 29, in a Section 2 Class C football game.

The Titans scored a pair of touchdowns to close the gap to 18-14 in the fourth quarter, but Cameron Lyles caught a 6-yard scoring strike from Jacob Hall to seal the victory for Catskill-Cairo-Durham.

Hall had touchdown runs of 72 and 27 yards in the first half, and Lyles caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Justice Brantley for Catskill-Cairo-Durham, which led 18-0 at halftime.

Gavin Bradway powered his way for a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to get Taconic Hills on the scoreboard. Marcus Hartman then threw a 34-yard scoring strike to Devon Charron in the fourth quarter, and Dusty Snyder added a two-point conversion run to pull the Titans within four points of Catskill-Cairo-Durham.

Section 2 Class C football: Coxsackie-Athens earns road win at Watervliet

Coxsackie-Athens pulled away with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat Watervliet 33-13 Friday, Sept. 28, in a Section 2 Class C football game.

Quarterback Joe Notarbartolo threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Indians. Notarbartolo connected with Jesse White on a 50-yard scoring strike in the first quarter and added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tim Simmons in the second quarter.

Notarbartolo also ran for 67 yards and a touchdown for Coxsackie-Athens. Jaylen Buckner gained 46 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Jarahn Parlemont led Watervliet with 60 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Section 2 Class C football: Helderberg Valley earns third straight win; Chatham cruises to victory

Jesse Waddell scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to lead Helderberg Valley to a 34-13 victory at Watervliet Friday, Sept. 21, in a Section 2 Class C South Division football game.

Waddell had a 45-yard scoring run early in the opening quarter and finished another drive with a 10-yard touchdown for Helderberg Valley (3-1), which won its third consecutive game after an opening week loss to Voorheesville. Jake Stahl added a 66-yard touchdown reception late in the first quarter to put Helderberg Valley ahead 20-0. Joe Tortello ties a state record for touchdown passes in Holy Trinity’s victory over Canajoharie-Fort Plain

SCHENECTADY – Holy Trinity quarterback Joe Tortello entered rarified territory Saturday, Sept. 15.

The junior joined five other quarterbacks in New York State high school football history in throwing eight touchdown passes in a single game, as he led the Pride to a 56-20 victory over Canajoharie-Fort Plain in a Section 2 Class C Central Division game at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons.
