Three Section 2 athletes enter this weekend’s New York State High School Track and Field Championships with the top performances in their individual events.
Ichabod Crane’s Ama Boham posted the top time among Division 2 (small school) athletes in the girls 100-meter high hurdles this season (14.40). No other girl in the Division 2 field posted a time close to Boham’s mark, and it is the second-fastest overall in New York State this season. Only Chibugo Obichere of Division 1’s Valley Stream South (Section 8) posted a faster overall time (13.80).
New Lebanon’s Allie Ryder enters the state meet with the top distance among Division 2 throwers in the girls discus. Ryder’s best throw this season is 122 feet, 5 inches, 2 inches ahead of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s LeeAnne Lowery. SCHODACK – Maple Hill won the boys and girls team titles at its invitational meet Saturday, April 13.
The boys team finished with 138 points, 13 points ahead of runner-up New Paltz. The girls team breezed to the title with 107 points – more than 40 points ahead of its nearest competitor, Broadalbin-Perth.
Maple Hill’s boys team was particularly strong in the 110-meter hurdles, where it swept the top three places. Bryan Jacobs led the way with a winning time of 15.86 seconds, less than four-tenths of a second ahead of Seth Roberts. Thacher Deyoe completed the 1-2-3 Wildcat sweep with a time of 16.31 seconds.
Roberts contributed a victory in the 200-meter dash for Maple Hill, and he teamed up with Evan Kulpa, Jack Pomykaj and Eric Steffeck to win the 400-meter relay. Kulpa had an individual victory in the long jump.
Emma Pearsall led the Maple Hill girls’ team with victories in the 400-meter race and the high jump. She also ran the anchor leg on the Wildcats’ winning 1,600-meter relay team. Other athletes with two individual titles include Ichabod Crane’s Monique Benn (100- and 200-meter dash) and Ama Boham (100- and 400-meter hurdles), as well as Duanesburg’s Elaine Atanasova (1,500- and 3,000-meter races) and New Lebanon-Berlin’s Allie Ryder (shot put and discus). ROTTERDAM – Top-seeded Lake George fended off No. 4 Mayfield 1-0 in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer semifinals Thursday, Oct. 25, at Mohonasen High School.
Phillip Shambo scored off a rebound in the 24th minute to give the Warriors their lead. Mayfield stormed back with a barrage of shots in the second half, but goalie Mason Flatley made several key saves to preserve the shutout.
Lake George advances to the Class C final, where it will meet No. 2 Maple Hill Monday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. at Colonie Central High School. Maple Hill got past No. 3 Stillwater 1-0 in the semifinals on a goal by Seth Roberts off Christian Beber’s corner kick in the first half. The top four seeds in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs advanced to the semifinal round with quarterfinal victories Monday, Oct. 22.
No. 1 Lake George (18-0-0) got past No. 8 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 3-1, as Alex Leonelli, Ethan Knauf and Justin Blanco tallied for the Warriors. SCHODACK – Seth Roberts’ overtime goal lifted Maple Hill to a 2-1 victory over Taconic Hills Wednesday, Sept. 26, in a Patroon Conference boys soccer showdown.
The Wildcats (8-1-0) took a 1-0 lead when Luke Charlebois scored on a breakaway four minutes into the game. The Titans (6-4-0 league, 7-5-0 overall) responded when Chris Davis tallied off Kolby Clegg’s corner kick, and the score remained tied at 1-1 through the remainder of regulation.
In overtime, Maple Hill sent a hard corner kick on goal that deflected off the hand of Taconic Hills goalkeeper John Disbrow. Roberts collected the ball and kicked it into the net to give the Wildcats the victory.
The win was Maple Hill head coach Dan Gillespie’s 659th career victory. Gillespie broke the New York State record for most wins by a boys soccer coach two days earlier when the Wildcats topped Coxsackie-Athens 2-0.

SCHODACK – Seth Roberts’ goal less than 14 minutes into the second half proved to be the difference for Maple Hill in a 1-0 victory over Catskill Tuesday, Sept. 18, in a Patroon Conference boys soccer game.
The Wildcats (4-1) made several unsuccessful pushes towards goal until Lucas Charlebois sent a through pass into the Catskill penalty box, where Roberts redirected it past Cats goalkeeper Andrew Tran inside the left post with 26:25 left in the second half.
