Soccer: Bethlehem boys edge Shaker in Suburban Council showdown

The Bethlehem boys soccer team made an early goal stand up in a 1-0 Suburban Council victory over Shaker Thursday, Sept. 5, in Latham.

Bethlehem received a corner kick one minute into the contest after Shaker’s defense cleared the ball over its own end line. On the corner itself, the ball bounced around the penalty box until Salko Kanic knocked it into the back of the net to give the Eagles the lead.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances throughout the rest of the game, but neither could finish their opportunities. Bethlehem finished the afternoon with 15 shots on goal and six corners, while Shaker registered 17 shots on frame and five corners.

Elsewhere in the Suburban Council, Paul Abatiello scored two minutes into extra time to give Christian Brothers Academy a 3-2 victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Abatiello struck in the seventh minute off an assist from Alejandro Torres to put the Brothers ahead 1-0. Jacob Scott converted a penalty kick five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1, but Wyatt Leto tallied in the 29th minute off a feed from Abatiello to give CBA a 2-1 halftime advantage.

Scott scored again two minutes into the second half to knot the score at 2-2 for BH-BL. The game remained deadlocked through the remained of regulation before Abatiello netted the game winner in overtime.

In the Foothills Council, Queensbury tallied four times in the second half to pull away for a 5-0 victory over Hudson Falls. Teddy Borgos scored two goals and added two assists for the Spartans. Peter Crawford, Asa Edwards and Brendan Duffy also recorded goals for Queensbury. Goaltender Joey Lapan made 15 saves for Hudson Falls.

In the Colonial Council, LaSalle edged Schalmont 1-0 on a first-half goal by Bennett Beaulieu. Anthony Rotello had 10 saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Cadets. Ryan Taylor made six saves for Schalmont.

In the Western Athletic Conference, Schoharie downed an undermanned Duanesburg squad 17-0. Noah Fagnani led the Indians with eight goals and two assists. The Eagles dressed only nine players due to low numbers and minimum practice regulations.

In non-league action, Greenwich edged Doane Stuart 4-3. Charlie Gartner and Tommy Abate each scored a goal in the first 12 minutes of the second half to give the Witches a 3-1 lead. AJ Rymph tallied twice for the Witches, while Nelson and Lwel Htoo scored for the Thunder Chickens.

Waterford-Halfmoon shut out Corinth 6-0 in another non-league contest. Nate Powell and Jason Cordts each netted two goals for the Fordians, and goaltender Jake Houle made five saves for the shutout, including one on a penalty kick.

Niskayuna advances past Bethlehem on penalty kicks in Section 2 Class AA boys soccer semifinals; CBA prevails

COLONIE – No. 7 Niskayuna outshot No. 2 Bethlehem 5-3 in penalty kicks to advance through the Section 2 Class AA boys soccer semifinals Friday, Oct. 26, at Colonie Central High School.

The Suburban Council rivals played to a scoreless draw through regulation and overtime, setting up the penalty kick round. Saidali Mesbahi scored first for Niskayuna, and then goalkeeper Jimmy Joyce stopped Derin Gumustop’s shot to give the Silver Warriors the advantage throughout the rest of PKs. Section 2 Class AA boys soccer: Shaker, Niskayuna pull off quarterfinal upsets

Goals in the closing seconds helped No. 5 Shaker and No. 7 Niskayuna win their Section 2 Class AA boys soccer quarterfinals games Saturday, Oct. 20.

Jack Cheney scored the game-winning goal with six seconds in regulation left to push Shaker (11-3-4) past defending Sectional champion Shenendehowa 2-1. The fourth-seeded Plainsmen (10-4-1) took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick late in the first half, but they were called for a handball inside their own penalty box early in the second half. Jack Acquario converted the penalty kick to tie the game, and then Cheney won it by heading in Stephen Guidi’s corner kick. Section 2 Class AA boys soccer playoffs: Shaker, Saratoga Springs cruise into quarterfinals

No. 5 Shaker had little trouble in its Section 2 Class AA boys soccer opening round playoff game against No. 12 Columbia, as the Blue Bison defeated the Blue Devils 6-0 Thursday, Oct. 18.

Hassan Alfadhil and Evan Austin each scored a pair of goals to lead Shaker (10-3-4) into the quarterfinals, where it will face No. 4 Shenendehowa Saturday, Oct. 20. Suburban Council boys soccer: Shaker strikes early in victory over Guilderland

GUILDERLAND CENTER – The Shaker boys soccer team closed out its Suburban Council regular season schedule with a 3-1 victory over Guilderland Saturday, Oct. 13.

The Blue Bison struck early on a muddy Guilderland field when Hassan Alfadhil headed in Stephen Guidi’s corner kick three minutes into the first half. Zaheer Irani scored off a rebound five minutes later to give Shaker a 2-0 advantage.

Ian Wu capitalized on a deflected shot to score Shaker’s third goal of the afternoon early in the second half. Brandon Ford got Guilderland on the scoreboard by converting a penalty kick.

Justin Osborn and Rohan Bagchi made a combined total of seven saves in goal for Shaker.

Suburban Council boys soccer: Albany rallies to tie Shaker; CBA takes sole possession of first place with win over Averill Park

Some movement at the top of the Suburban Council standings could impact seedings for the Section 2 Class AA boys soccer tournament when brackets are announced next week.

Shaker’s 1-1 tie against Albany and Christian Brothers Academy’s 6-0 victory over Averill Park Tuesday, Oct. 9, allowed the Brothers to open up a two-point lead on the Falcons for the Gray Division title and a two-point advantage over Bethlehem for the overall top spot in the league. Two of the top Suburban Council Blue Division boys soccer teams met in Latham Thursday, Oct. 4, with Bethlehem and Shaker playing to a 1-1 tie.

Will Augstell scored on a direct kick in the first half to give the Blue Bison (7-2-3 league, 8-3-3 overall) a 1-0 lead, but Gabe Kaprielian tallied with five minutes left in the second half to pull the Eagles (7-2-1, 9-2-1) even. Suburban Council boys soccer: Shaker, CBA win in the rain

Tuesday’s rain wreaked havoc on the Suburban Council boys soccer schedule, as only two of the five scheduled games were reported as having been completed, while two others were officially postponed.

Suburban Council boys soccer: Shaker plays CBA to a tie; Albany handles Averill Park

Shaker rallied from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-3 tie against Christian Brothers Academy Thursday, Sept. 27, in a Suburban Council boys soccer game.

Evan Austin and Jack Acquario scored within the first five minutes of the second half to pull the Blue Bison even with the Brothers. Alejandro Torres converted a penalty kick to give CBA a 3-2 lead, but Ryan Watson tallied with less than eight minutes left in regulation to knot the score at 3-3.

Suburban Council boys soccer: Shaker defeats Ballston Spa; CBA shuts down Schenectady

The Shaker boys soccer team prevailed on Senior Night with a 4-1 victory over Ballston Spa Tuesday, Sept. 25, in a Suburban Council game.

Ian Wu converted a penalty kick at the five-minute mark to give the Blue Bison (6-2-1 league, 7-3-1 overall) a 1-0 lead. Then, Ryan Watson tallied three minutes later off a feed from Zaheer Irani to put Shaker in front by a pair of goals.

Ballston Spa (3-6-1, 4-7-1) scored to pull within a goal, but Ryan Pardo and Jack Acquario tallied before halftime to give Shaker a 4-1 lead. The Scotties controlled the tempo for much of the second half, but they could not get any closer.

Elsewhere in the Suburban Council, Christian Brothers Academy downed Schenectady 7-0. Brady Van Epps had two goals and two assists within the first 20 minutes for the Brothers (8-1-0), while Keegan Vedder contributed a goal and two assists in that time span. Eli D’Onofrio chipped in with a goal and an assist, with Josh Huckans, Michael Puccioni and Drew Decker rounding out the scoring for the Brothers.

Schenectady’s record dipped to 2-7-1 in the league and 2-8-1 overall.
