Section 2 football: A first glance at Class AA

There was only one change to Class AA for the 2019 Section 2 football season. Albany elected to play in Class A, leaving Class AA with only nine teams playing in one division: Bethlehem, Christian Brothers Academy, Colonie, Guilderland, Niskayuna, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, Shaker and Shenendehowa.

The lack of any additions to the Class AA field means that there will be only four teams qualifying for Sectionals for the second consecutive year. The move to one division was precipitated in 2018 when Troy, Ballston Spa, Columbia and LaSalle moved down to Class A following new BEDS numbers posted by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. Six Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake football players named to Class A All-State team

The New York State Sportswriters Association revealed its Class AA and Class A All-State Football Teams Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake had the most players chosen to the All-State team among Section 2 programs with six, led by first-team offense selection Vincent Daviero. The senior led all area running backs with 1,557 yards and 21 touchdowns as he helped the Spartans win the Section 2 Class A title.

Linebacker Bryce Mussen was a second team All-State selection on defense for BH-BL, while tailback D.J.  Lashley received a fifth team honor. Quarterback Darien LaPietro, lineman Victor Little and defensive back Logan Stubblebine were honorable mentions.

Averill Park had five players receive All-State recognition, while Queenbury had four players receive statewide honors. Shaker, Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs all had four players named to the All-State team in Class AA.
