Section 2 Class A boys basketball playoffs: Mohonasen opens with victory over Catholic Central

Defending Section 2 Class A champion Mohonasen began this year’s boys basketball tournament with a 62-37 victory over No. 11 Catholic Central Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Rotterdam.

Duncan Tallman made four three-pointers and finished with a team-leading 21 points for the sixth-seeded Mighty Warriors, who jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter. Chase Monroe contributed 12 points, and Shawn Gillisslee added nine points.

Jackson Brown scored 13 points for Catholic Central.

Scenes from Colonial Council boys basketball: Schalmont wins Battle of Rotterdam for the second time

ROTTERDAM – Undefeated Schalmont completed a season sweep of crosstown rival Mohonasen with a 60-49 victory Thursday, Jan. 31, in a Colonial Council boys basketball game at Mohonasen High School.

The Sabres weathered an early storm from the Mighty Warriors to take a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, and then went on a 9-0 run to begin the second quarter to break the game open. By halftime, Schalmont led 32-18.

Mohonasen made several attempts to get back into the contest in the second half, but Schalmont hit several key shots down the stretch to maintain a comfortable margin over the Mighty Warriors. Colonial Council boys basketball: Mohonasen edges Lansingburgh

Mohonasen overcame a four-point halftime deficit to edge Lansingburgh 59-55 in a Colonial Council boys basketball game Friday, Jan. 25.

Chase Monroe had 24 points for the Mighty Warriors, who outscored the Knights 21-14 in the third quarter. Shawn Gillisslee contributed 18 points, and Duncan Tallman added 13 points.

Boys basketball: Tamarac defeats New Lebanon to clinch first winning season in 10 years

The Tamarac boys basketball team locked up its first winning season since 2009 with a 64-44 non-league victory against New Lebanon Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Anthony Ciampolillo and Frank Zotto each scored 17 points to lead the Bengals (11-3), who pulled away from the Tigers with a 21-9 run in the second quarter. Cole Erickson had 14 points, and Clayton Erickson contributed 13 points for New Lebanon.

Elsewhere, Duncan Tallman became Mohonasen’s all-time scoring leader as the Mighty Warriors defeated Schenectady 71-63. Tallman scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter lead Mohonasen to victory and surpass Phil DeCarlo atop the school’s leaderboard with 1,274 points.

Shawn Gillisslee chipped in with 16 points, and Chase Monroe added 15 points for Mohonasen, which overcame a slow start to build a 33-30 halftime lead. Elijah Johnsen had 15 points for Schenectady. Colonial Council boys basketball: Watervliet ends Mohonasen’s seven game winning streak

Watervliet went on a 19-9 run in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 61-47 victory over Mohonasen Friday, Jan. 18, in a Colonial Council boys basketball game.

J.J. Chestnut scored 22 points to lead the Cannoneers, who handed Mohonasen its first loss in its last eight games. Derrick Beason contributed 14 points, and Messiah Mallory added 13 points for Watervliet.

Colonial Council boys basketball: Mohonasen dominates second quarter in victory over Catholic Central

Mohonasen outscored Catholic Central 23-9 in the second quarter to take control on its way to a 66-50 home victory Friday, Jan. 11, in a Colonial Council boys basketball game.

Duncan Tallman led four Mohonasen players in double digits with 15 points. Nicholas Richmond had 13 points, Shawn Gillisslee contributed 12 points and Logan Calkins added 10 points for the Mighty Warriors.

Non-league boys basketball: Mohonasen cruises past Guilderland in rivalry game

Mohonasen and Guilderland used to be neighboring Suburban Council rivals until Mohonasen moved to the Colonial Council this season.

The boys basketball teams from the two schools kept their rivalry going this season, with Mohonasen getting the better of Guilderland 77-41 Saturday, Jan. 5.

Guilderland kept the game close through the first quarter, but Mohonasen used a 22-7 run in the second quarter to build a 37-17 halftime lead. The Mighty Warriors continued their onslaught with a 24-point third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Duncan Tallman sank six three-pointers on his way to a 28-point afternoon for Mohonasen. Chase Monroe contributed 17 points, while Nicholas Richmond, Drew Coelho and Shawn Gillisslee all added eight points.

Non-league boys basketball: Mohonasen edges Colonie on last-second three-pointer

ROTTERDAM – Shawn Gillisslee hit a three-pointer as time expired to give Mohonasen a 50-48 victory over Colonie in a non-league boys basketball game Thursday, Nov. 29.

It was one of only three shots from the field that Gillisslee made during the course of the game, but it proved to be the game winner for the Mighty Warriors. Gillisslee finished with nine points.

Duncan Tallman led Mohonasen with 23 points, which brought him within striking distance of joining the 1,000-point club. Tallman needs 21 points in Tuesday’s home game against Ichabod Crane – the first league contest for Mohonasen as a member of the Colonial Council. Chase Monroe contributed 15 points in the victory over Colonie.

Marcus Shelton netted 17 points, and Logan Scott added nine points for Colonie.
