Brother vs. brother championship match highlights Section 2 Wrestling Championships

There was an unusual sight at this year’s Section 2 Wrestling Championships Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls.

Twin brothers Dylan and Ryan Sleezer of Queensbury met in the finals of the Division 1 (large school) 113-pound bracket. Ryan had defeated Dylan at two other tournaments, including the Section 2 Class B championships one week earlier, but Dylan edged Ryan 6-5 Saturday to win the title and earn an automatic berth to the state wrestling championships Feb. 22 and 23 in Albany.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Niskayuna, Shenendehowa and Averill Park each had a pair of wrestlers win titles in Division 1. The closest championship match was at 138 pounds, as Niskayuna’s Willie Thacker edged LaSalle’s Nick Pino on criteria after wrestling to a 12-12 tie. Section 2 wrestling championships: A look back at the class tournaments

Saturday, Feb. 2, was championship day for the five classes in Section 2 wrestling.

The Class A, B, C, CC and D tournaments took place around the region. The results help determine the majority of the field for this weekend’s Section 2 Division 1 (large school) and Division 2 (small school) championships, which take place at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls.

Weekend wrestling wrap-up: Tamarac wins Wasaren League Tournament

Tamarac fended off Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George to win the Wasaren League Wrestling Tournament Saturday, Jan. 26, at Salem-Cambridge.

The Bengals had two individual champions – Riley Retell (120 pounds) and Bobby Treshock (138) – to help them take the team title with 159.5 points. The War Eagles placed second with 143.5 points, and Averill Park finished third with 133 points.

Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George and Maple Hill also had a pair of individual champions apiece – Logan Duers (152 pounds) and Cody York (182) for the War Eagles, and Caleb (106) and Trent Svingala (132) for the Wildcats. Suburban Council wrestling: Shaker edges Niskayuna in dual meet

One week after defeating Saratoga Springs, Shaker edged Niskayuna 38-35 in a Suburban Council wrestling match Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Jashon Homes’ pin against Brody Johnson at 106 pounds and Michael Santore’s 15-2 victory over Matthew Whelan at 113 pounds gave the Blue Bison a 38-32 lead. Jack Schiavo closed out the match with a 5-4 victory over Austin Sill at 120 pounds for Niskayuna, but it wasn’t enough.

Ghassan Chehade (182 pounds) and Ryan Stein (195) also recorded pins for Shaker. Ben Catrambone (126), Willie Thacker (138) and Peter Meshkov (160) pinned their opponents for Niskayuna. Continue reading “Suburban Council wrestling: Shaker edges Niskayuna in dual meet”

Section 2 wrestling: Shenendehowa, Warrensburg advance to state dual meet tournament

Shenendehowa rallied past Columbia 47-34 to win the Division 1 title at the Section 2 Dual Meet Championships Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Shenendehowa High School.

The Plainsmen found themselves down by as many as 14 points in the championship match before taking six of the final seven bouts, including the last four in a row.

Colden Dorfman (170 pounds), Sebastian Underwood (220), David Ensminger (99) and Stevo Poulin (106) recorded pins for Shenendehowa. Jacob Slovak (126), Zach Strope (132), Jakob Edwards (160) and Ryan Duryea (195) pinned their opponents for Columbia. Suburban Council wrestling: Shaker surges past Saratoga Springs

Three consecutive pins by middleweights Tyler Stanton, Bassir Rezek and Ghassan Chehade helped Shaker defeat Saratoga Springs 42-35 Wednesday, Jan. 9, in a Suburban Council wrestling match.

Stanton (152 pounds) pinned Jake DeLuca with seven seconds left in the second period to get the streak going for the Blue Bison. Rezek (160) pinned David Wilk midway through the second period of their bout, and Chehade (170) followed suit with a second-period pin over Spencer Cornell.

Doug Cooper (220 pounds) and Kyle Griskowitz (99) scored pins to help Saratoga build an 18-0 lead before Jashon Holmes (106) and Michael Santore (113) recorded falls to get Shaker back in the match. Continue reading “Suburban Council wrestling: Shaker surges past Saratoga Springs”

Teams are set for Section 2 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships

The field is set for the Section 2 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships Tuesday, Jan. 15.

In Division 1, Shenendehowa received the No. 1 seed and the right to host the tournament. The Plainsmen will face No. 4 Queensbury, while No. 2 Columbia combats No. 3 Ballston Spa.

The Division 2 tournament takes place at Warrensburg, where the top-seeded Burghers wrestle No. 4 Whitehall/Fort Ann and No. 2 Watervliet takes on No. 3 Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George.

Suburban Council wrestling: Shenendehowa wins showdown with Ballston Spa; Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake takes down Niskayuna

Shenendehowa gained the upper hand in the race for the Suburban Council’s best record by beating Ballston Spa 42-29 in a league wrestling match Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Three pins and a technical fall helped the Plainsmen defeat one of their closest rivals. Antonio Lomascolo (126 pounds), Brandon Fahr (182) and Sebastian Underwood (220) recorded the falls, while Brock Delsignore (145) earned the technical fall.
