ITHACA – Bethlehem’s 200-yard freestyle relay team earned a second-place finish at the New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, Nov. 17, at Ithaca College.
Maggie Hartman, Anna Bernasconi, Megan Novak and Sydney Sorbello finished with an All-American Consideration time of 1:37.08 in Saturday’s championship finals to place second to the team from Sleepy Hollow-Hastings-Edgemont-Irvington (Section 1), which took the state and Federation titles with a time of 1:35.56. Earlier in the day, Bethlehem’s 200-yard medley relay team of Sorbello, Hartman, Novak and Ella Kaback took sixth place with a time of 1:48.43. ITHACA – Fonda-Johnstown’s Alayna Gray posted the top time in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries during Day 1 of the New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Friday, Nov. 16, at Ithaca College.
Gray won her heat with an All-American Consideration time of 23.39 seconds to earn the No. 1 seed for Saturday’s championship round. Bethlehem’s Sydney Sorbello also made the cutoff for the championship heat when she posted the ninth-fastest time in preliminaries (23.94).
Gray followed up her 50-yard freestyle performance by posting the fourth-fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries at 51.76 seconds. Sorbello qualified for the championship heat of the 100-yard backstroke by posting the fifth-best preliminary time with a mark of 57.18 seconds. Section 2 is sending a large contingent to Ithaca College for this weekend’s New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships.
At least four swimmers from Section 2 in every event posted qualifying times throughout the season to reach the state meet. Shenendehowa, Niskayuna, Bethlehem and Ballston Spa are all sending three relay teams to states, with Shen also sending 11 individuals. CLIFTON PARK – Shenendehowa (Division 1) and Queensbury (Division 2) eased to the team titles at the Section 2 Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Shenendehowa Aquatic Center.
Shen dethroned defending Division 1 champion Niskayuna with a commanding total of 441 points. Niskayuna placed second with 407 points, and Bethlehem finished third with 254 points.
Mohonasen-Schalmont’s Mary Kate Conway and Bethlehem’s Sydney Sorbello each won a pair of individual events at the Division 1 meet. Conway claimed first place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, while Sorbello finished first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle.
Niskayuna’s Lillian Bushway (500-yard freestyle) and Yunfan Dong (100-yard backstroke) also won individual events Saturday, as did Albany Academy’s Claire Gerdeman (50-yard freestyle), and Guilderville’s Kasey Keaney (100-yard breaststroke).
