Section 2 wrestling: Shenendehowa, Warrensburg advance to state dual meet tournament

Shenendehowa rallied past Columbia 47-34 to win the Division 1 title at the Section 2 Dual Meet Championships Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Shenendehowa High School.

The Plainsmen found themselves down by as many as 14 points in the championship match before taking six of the final seven bouts, including the last four in a row.

Colden Dorfman (170 pounds), Sebastian Underwood (220), David Ensminger (99) and Stevo Poulin (106) recorded pins for Shenendehowa. Jacob Slovak (126), Zach Strope (132), Jakob Edwards (160) and Ryan Duryea (195) pinned their opponents for Columbia. Section 2 wrestling: Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George prevails at Joe McCabe Invitational

Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George held on to win the team title at the Joe McCabe Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday, Jan. 12, at Maple Hill High School in Schodack.

The War Eagles finished with 219.5 points, 11 points ahead of runner-up Watervliet and 22 points ahead of third-place Columbia.

Coxsackie-Athens placed sixth in the team standings, but had the most individual champions with three. Logan Campbell pinned Columbia’s Michael Yelle midway through the first period to claim the 113-pound division title, while Marc Martinez earned a first-period fall over Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George’s William Mitcham for the 285-pound championship. Devon Shader edged Whitehall-Fort Ann’s Brendan Covey 5-4 for the 195-pound division title.

We’re back with a new episode of Capital Region HS Sports: The Podcast.

This week, we have interviews with Bethlehem boys basketball head coach A.G. Irons and senior forward Michael Ortale as the Eagles are battling for first place in the Suburban Council. We also talked with Warrensburg wrestling coach Mark Trapasso ahead of next week’s Section 2 Division 2 Dual Meet Championships, which are being hosted by the Burghers. And, we caught up with Shenendehowa hockey coach Juan de la Rocha and Albany Academy hockey coach Dave Rider following Thursday night’s Capital District High School Hockey League showdown, which the Plainsmen won 4-3. Teams are set for Section 2 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships

The field is set for the Section 2 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships Tuesday, Jan. 15.

In Division 1, Shenendehowa received the No. 1 seed and the right to host the tournament. The Plainsmen will face No. 4 Queensbury, while No. 2 Columbia combats No. 3 Ballston Spa.

The Division 2 tournament takes place at Warrensburg, where the top-seeded Burghers wrestle No. 4 Whitehall/Fort Ann and No. 2 Watervliet takes on No. 3 Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George.

The winners from the Division 1 and Division 2 tournaments advance to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Dual Meet Championships Saturday, Jan. 26, at SRC Arena in Syracuse. Continue reading “Teams are set for Section 2 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships”
