Glens Falls quarterback Joseph Girard III was named the Class B Co-Player of the Year for the second year in a row when the New York State Sportswriters Association revealed its small school all-state football teams Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Girard threw for 3,084 yards and 36 touchdowns against six interceptions to lead the Indians to their second state Class B title in three years. He also carried the ball 107 times for 395 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he had three touchdowns on defense and special teams.
Girard split Player of the Year honors with Batavia running back Ray Leach, who set Section 5 records for rushing yards, touchdowns and points scored in leading the Blue Devils to the state final against Glens Falls.
Glens Falls kicker Sam Hogan and Hudson linebacker Spencer Goldstein were first team all-state selections in Class B. Hogan converted 57 extra point kicks and added a pair of field goals, while Goldstein was one of the top defenders for a Hudson team that finished second in the Reinfurt Division. The Western Athletic Conference announced its Division 1 and Division 2 most valuable players and all-star boys soccer teams Wednesday, Oct. 31.
Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons senior Wil Lawson was named the Division 1 MVP, while Oppenheim-Ephretah-St. Johnsville’s Jack Brundage received the Division 2 MVP honor. Lawson led NDBG with 29 goals and 10 assists, while Brundage posted 32 goals and seven assists for OESJ.
Mayfield’s Evan Lehr was selected by the WAC coaches as the Division 1 Goalkeeper of the Year, while Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Duanesburg’s Tyler Goodemote was chosen as the Division 2 Goalie of the Year.

The top four seeds in the Section 2 Class C boys soccer playoffs advanced to the semifinal round with quarterfinal victories Monday, Oct. 22.
No. 1 Lake George (18-0-0) got past No. 8 Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 3-1, as Alex Leonelli, Ethan Knauf and Justin Blanco tallied for the Warriors. Lake George goalkeeper Mason Flatley had several saves, including a key stop late in the second half. Wil Lawson notched Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons’ goal. SCHENECTADY – For the second time since it re-started its boys soccer program four years ago, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons has reached the second round of the Section 2 playoffs.
Wil Lawson’s hat trick led the eighth-seeded Golden Knights (11-4-0) to a 4-0 victory over No. 9 Bolton-Warrensburg in a Class C opening round game Thursday, Oct. 18, at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School.
