Section 2 boys lacrosse playoffs: Voorheesville edges Cambridge in overtime

No. 4 Voorheesville outlasted No. 5 Cambridge 10-9 in the Section 2 Class D boys lacrosse quarterfinals Saturday, May 18.

Ian Owens had a six-point day for the Blackbirds, recording three goals and adding three assists. Jake Palmer also notched a hat trick, while John Hanlon contributed a pair of goals.

Gabriel Sgambettera tallied four times for Cambridge, and goaltender Daniel Blanchfield made 16 saves. Jamie Olvera chipped in with three goals and three assists.

Suburban Council boys lacrosse: Shawn Hennessey becomes Shaker’s all-time winningest coach

Shawn Hennessey became Shaker boys lacrosse’s all-time winningest coach with the Blue Bison’s 15-0 Suburban Council victory over Averill Park Thursday, April 4, in Latham.

Shaker struck for six goals in the first quarter on its way to giving Hennessey his 141st career win. Matt Calicchia, Amos Grimm and Sean McLean all had hat tricks to lead a balanced Blue Bison attack.

Shenendehowa pulled out an 11-10 overtime victory over Saratoga Springs. Eric Makahatdze notched the game winner as part of a two-goal afternoon, and Billy Beach tallied four times for the Plainsmen.

Suburban Council basketball: Shen, Saratoga split doubleheader

Shenendehowa won the girls game, while Saratoga Springs prevailed in the boys game at a Suburban Council varsity basketball doubleheader Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Shenendehowa.

Meghan Huerter’s three-pointer with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter lifted Shen to a 58-56 victory over Saratoga in the girls game.

The Plainswomen used a balanced offensive attack to offset Saratoga’s power duo of Catherine Cairns and Kerry Flaherty, who combined to score 43 of the Blue Streaks’ 56 points. Boys basketball: Tamarac defeats New Lebanon to clinch first winning season in 10 years

The Tamarac boys basketball team locked up its first winning season since 2009 with a 64-44 non-league victory against New Lebanon Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Anthony Ciampolillo and Frank Zotto each scored 17 points to lead the Bengals (11-3), who pulled away from the Tigers with a 21-9 run in the second quarter. Cole Erickson had 14 points, and Clayton Erickson contributed 13 points for New Lebanon.

Elsewhere, Duncan Tallman became Mohonasen’s all-time scoring leader as the Mighty Warriors defeated Schenectady 71-63. Tallman scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter lead Mohonasen to victory and surpass Phil DeCarlo atop the school’s leaderboard with 1,274 points.

Shawn Gillisslee chipped in with 16 points, and Chase Monroe added 15 points for Mohonasen, which overcame a slow start to build a 33-30 halftime lead. Elijah Johnsen had 15 points for Schenectady. Suburban Council boys basketball: Bethlehem wins battle of undefeated teams

A big third quarter helped Bethlehem defeat Saratoga Springs 75-65 in a battle of undefeated Suburban Council boys basketball teams Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The Eagles outscored the Blue Streaks 25-16 in the third period to open up a 12-point lead. Saratoga Springs made several attempts to get back into the game, but Bethlehem held on for the 10-point win.

Pat Ryan played a big role in Bethlehem’s victory. The senior guard made six three-pointers on his way to a season-high 20-point performance. Jake LaClair contributed 15 points, while Eric Signor (12 points) and Michael Ortale (11 points) added a combined total of 23 points.

Will Fox paced Saratoga Springs with 18 points, and Aidan Holmes chipped in with 16 points.

Suburban Council boys basketball: Shenendehowa uses big run to take down Columbia; CBA hangs on for a victory

Shenendehowa outscored Columbia 35-16 over the course of the second and third quarters to defeat the Blue Devils 64-45 Tuesday, Dec. 18, in a Suburban Council boys basketball game.

Jake Reinisch had another big night for the Plainsmen. Reinisch made six shots from beyond the three-point arc and finished with 30 points to lead all scorers. Nick Lemire added 12 points, nine of which came from beyond the three-point line.
