SCHOHARIE – The Schoharie-Middleburgh rivalry (or Schoburg, for short) lived up to its billing, as the neighboring Western Athletic Conference boys soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie Friday, Sept. 21.
Middleburgh goalkeeper Will Bankston was sharp between the posts, stopping seven of the eight shots he faced. The lone exception was a 25-yard free kick by Schoharie’s Dustin Bengston that he tucked inside the upper corner midway through the first half for a 1-0 Indians lead.
Schoharie netminder Bailey Smart was on point, as well. Smart made 13 saves, with only a Kaurice Bell goal early in the second half preventing a shutout.
