Section 2 represented on New York State Sportswriters Association’s All-State softball team

Several Section 2 players were first-team selections in their respective classes on this year’s New York State Sportswriters Association All-State softball team.

Shenendehowa outfielder Emily Carroll (Class AA), Ballston Spa’s Lauren Kersch and Angelina Stile (Class A), South Glens Falls’ Leah Vanderwarker (Class A), Ichabod Crane’s Bella Milazzo and Gabbie Cox (Class B), Lake George pitcher Tyler Bergman (Class C), Chatham pitcher Jenna Skype (Class C), Whitehall pitcher Madison Gould (Class D) and Fort Ann pitcher Kayla Bailey (Class D) earned first-team honors.

State track meet primer: Ama Boham, Allie Ryder and Donald Jones lead list of Section 2 contenders

Three Section 2 athletes enter this weekend’s New York State High School Track and Field Championships with the top performances in their individual events.

Ichabod Crane’s Ama Boham posted the top time among Division 2 (small school) athletes in the girls 100-meter high hurdles this season (14.40). No other girl in the Division 2 field posted a time close to Boham’s mark, and it is the second-fastest overall in New York State this season. Only Chibugo Obichere of Division 1’s Valley Stream South (Section 8) posted a faster overall time (13.80).

New Lebanon’s Allie Ryder enters the state meet with the top distance among Division 2 throwers in the girls discus. Ryder’s best throw this season is 122 feet, 5 inches, 2 inches ahead of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s LeeAnne Lowery. Section 2 announces playoff seedings, match-ups

The Section 2 baseball committee unveiled its seedings and match-ups for the playoffs Wednesday, May 22.

Niskayuna (Class AA), Ballston Spa (A), Coxsackie-Athens (B), Chatham (C) and Whitehall (D) received No. 1 seeds for their respective classes. Whitehall and No. 2 Germantown each received byes into the semifinal round, as Class D had only six teams qualify for the playoffs.

Opening round games are scheduled for Thursday, May 23, weather permitting. The finals take place at Joseph Bruno Stadium at Hudson Valley Community College May 31 through June 3.

Shenendehowa, Ballston Spa among top seeds for 2019 Section 2 softball playoffs

Shenendehowa (Class AA), Ballston Spa (A), Ichabod Crane (B), Chatham (C) and Whitehall (D) are the No. 1 seeds in their respective classes for the 2019 Section 2 softball tournament.

The playoffs kick off Thursday, May 23, with preliminary round games in classes A, B and C. The quarterfinals take place Tuesday, May 28, and all five finals will be played Tuesday, June 4.

Here is a look at the match-ups in the five classes.

Section 2 boys lacrosse playoffs: Voorheesville edges Cambridge in overtime

No. 4 Voorheesville outlasted No. 5 Cambridge 10-9 in the Section 2 Class D boys lacrosse quarterfinals Saturday, May 18.

Ian Owens had a six-point day for the Blackbirds, recording three goals and adding three assists. Jake Palmer also notched a hat trick, while John Hanlon contributed a pair of goals.

Gabriel Sgambettera tallied four times for Cambridge, and goaltender Daniel Blanchfield made 16 saves. Jamie Olvera chipped in with three goals and three assists.

Niskayuna receives No. 1 seed for Section 2 Class A boys lacrosse playoffs

The state’s top-ranked Class A public school boys lacrosse team received the top seed for the Section 2 playoffs Friday, May 17.

Boys lacrosse: Shenendehowa rallies past CBA

A five-goal third quarter propelled Shenendehowa past Christian Brothers Academy 11-8 Thursday, May 2, in a Suburban Council boys lacrosse game.

Eric Makhatadze had four goals and two assists to lead the Plainsmen, who trailed 6-5 at halftime before taking control of the game. Billy Beach recorded a hat trick, and goaltender Jacob Aragones made nine saves.

Suburban Council baseball: Niskayuna hangs on to defeat Troy

NISKAYUNA – Niskayuna fended off a seventh-inning rally to defeat Troy 13-11 Friday, April 12 in a Suburban Council baseball game.

The Flying Horses scored nine runs in the top of the seventh to close a large deficit, but Robert Schneider recorded the final out of the game to earn the save. The Silver Warriors used four pitchers in the seventh inning after starter Robert Morra allowed two unearned runs and struck out seven in six innings of work. Section 2 football: A first glance at Class A

We will be taking a look at the alignments and schedules for all five football classes in Section 2 this week. To read about Class D, click here. To read about Class C, click here. To read about Class B, click here.

Very little changed for Class A when Section 2 revealed its alignments and schedules for the 2019 football season. Troy, Ballston Spa, LaSalle and Columbia remain in Class A for another season after dropping down from Class AA in 2018.

The lone addition is Albany, a Class AA team that is electing to play a Class A schedule. Albany has made this move before in an attempt to be more competitive during the regular season. Suburban Council boys lacrosse: Shaker silences Columbia

Shaker limited Columbia to eight shots on goal on its way to posting an 8-1 victory Thursday, April 11, in a Suburban Council boys lacrosse game.

Sean McLean and Zach Mein each notched a pair of goals for the Blue Bison, who took control of the game with a five-goal second quarter. Logan Souza contributed a goal and two assists, and goalie Ryan Mazzariello stopped seven shots.
