Section 2 swimmers compete for state and Federation titles this weekend

Section 2 is sending a large contingent to Ithaca College for this weekend’s New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships. At least four swimmers from Section 2 in every event posted qualifying times throughout the season to reach the state meet. Shenendehowa, Niskayuna, Bethlehem and Ballston Spa are all sending three relay teams to states, with Shen also sending 11 individuals. Shenendehowa, Queensbury win team titles at Section 2 Girls Swimming and Diving Championships

CLIFTON PARK – Shenendehowa (Division 1) and Queensbury (Division 2) eased to the team titles at the Section 2 Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Shenendehowa Aquatic Center.

Shen dethroned defending Division 1 champion Niskayuna with a commanding total of 441 points. Niskayuna placed second with 407 points, and Bethlehem finished third with 254 points.

Mohonasen-Schalmont’s Mary Kate Conway and Bethlehem’s Sydney Sorbello each won a pair of individual events at the Division 1 meet. Conway claimed first place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, while Sorbello finished first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle.

Niskayuna’s Lillian Bushway (500-yard freestyle) and Yunfan Dong (100-yard backstroke) also won individual events Saturday, as did Albany Academy’s Claire Gerdeman (50-yard freestyle), and Guilderville’s Kasey Keaney (100-yard breaststroke). A look back at the Section 2 Cross Country Championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS – One race lived up to its pre-event billing, while another showdown never materialized at Friday’s Section 2 Cross Country Championships at a soggy Saratoga Spa State Park.

The Class A boys race turned into a battle royale between Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs, with the Plainsmen pulling out a three-point victory over the Blue Streaks, 60-63. Saratoga had two of the top four runners in the race, but Shen’s pack mentality proved to be the deciding factor.

Scenes from Section 2 boys soccer playoffs: Queensbury reigns supreme in Class A with a convincing win in the finals

COLONIE – Top-seeded Queensbury scored three times in the second half to pull away for a 4-0 victory over Ballston Spa in the Section 2 Class A boys soccer final Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Colonie Central High School.

Teddy Borgos gave the Spartans – New York State’s top-ranked Class A team – a 1-0 lead late in the first half when he converted a penalty kick. Ray Jones headed in a pass from Aidan Jordi-Donnelly eight minutes into the second half to double Queensbury’s advantage, and then Jordi-Donnelly finished a give-and-go with Borgos with a goal to make the score 3-0.

Asa Edwards finished the scoring for Queensbury with a goal off a pass from Borgos, who finished the evening with three points (one goal, two assists).

Section 2 girls volleyball tournament: Semifinal match-ups are set for Class AA and Class A

Class AA and Class A held their quarterfinal matches Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Section 2 girls volleyball playoffs.

The top four seeds advanced in Class AA, though two of the matches were close. No. 4 Columbia edged No. 5 Guilderland 3-2, while No. 3 Niskayuna got past No. 6 Bethlehem 3-1.

Columbia and Guilderland split the first four games before the Blue Devils pulled out a 25-23 victory in the fifth game. Chesney Romer had 20 kills for Columbia in the victory.

Niskayuna won the first two games of its playoff against Bethlehem 25-20 and 25-15. The Lady Eagles took the third game 25-18 before the Silver Warriors closed the match with a 25-13 victory in the fourth game. Queensbury, Ballston Spa advance to the Section 2 Class A boys soccer finals

COLONIE – No. 6 seed Ballston Spa will look for one more upset when it takes on top-seeded Queensbury in Saturday’s Section 2 Class A boys soccer final.

Ballston Spa advanced with a 1-0 semifinal victory over No. 2 Albany Academy Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Colonie Central High School, while Queensbury sailed past No. 4 South Glens Falls 3-0 in the other semifinal. Section 2 girls volleyball seedings are announced

Shenendehowa (AA), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (A), Broadalbin-Perth (B), Voorheesville (C) and Galway (D) are the No. 1 seeds in their respective classes for the 2018 Section 2 girls volleyball tournament.

Section 2 Class A boys soccer: Queensbury gets past stubborn Scotia-Glenville; Ballston Spa edges Averill Park

Top-seeded Queensbury (16-1-0) pulled out a 3-0 victory over No. 8 Scotia-Glenville in the Section 2 Class B boys soccer quarterfinals Friday, Oct. 19.

The Tartans (10-8-0) pressured Queensbury’s defense several times in the first half,  but could not get anything into the goal. The Spartans got on the scoreboard less than one minute before halftime when Aidan Jordi-Donnelly fed a through ball to Teddy Borgos, who promptly kicked it into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Section 2 girls soccer playoffs: Bethlehem, Averill Park, Holy Names, Stillwater and Fort Ann are top seeds

Brackets for the Section 2 girls soccer playoffs were announced Monday, Oct. 15, and two Suburban Council teams were among the five No. 1 seeds.

Bethlehem received the No. 1 seed in Class AA after winning the Blue Division title, while Averill Park claimed the No. 1 seed in Class A after finishing first in the Gray Division. Colonial Council champion Academy of the Holy Names (Class B), Wasaren League champion Stillwater (Class C) and Adirondack League runner-up Fort Ann (Class D) were the other three No. 1 seeds.
