Academy of the Holy Names junior Ava Panto was named the Player of the Year when the Colonial Council announced its girls soccer all-stars Wednesday, Nov. 7.
Panto scored a team-high 38 goals and added eight assists to help Holy Names win the Colonial Council Liberty Division and the Section 2 Class B titles.
Four more Holy Names players – Megan Marini, Bella Tronco, Marissa DeMartino and Grace Field – were named first team all-stars. CLIFTON PARK – Shenendehowa (Division 1) and Queensbury (Division 2) eased to the team titles at the Section 2 Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Shenendehowa Aquatic Center.
Shen dethroned defending Division 1 champion Niskayuna with a commanding total of 441 points. Niskayuna placed second with 407 points, and Bethlehem finished third with 254 points.
Mohonasen-Schalmont’s Mary Kate Conway and Bethlehem’s Sydney Sorbello each won a pair of individual events at the Division 1 meet. Conway claimed first place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, while Sorbello finished first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle.
Niskayuna’s Lillian Bushway (500-yard freestyle) and Yunfan Dong (100-yard backstroke) also won individual events Saturday, as did Albany Academy’s Claire Gerdeman (50-yard freestyle), and Guilderville’s Kasey Keaney (100-yard breaststroke). SARATOGA SPRINGS – One race lived up to its pre-event billing, while another showdown never materialized at Friday’s Section 2 Cross Country Championships at a soggy Saratoga Spa State Park.
The Class A boys race turned into a battle royale between Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs, with the Plainsmen pulling out a three-point victory over the Blue Streaks, 60-63. Saratoga had two of the top four runners in the race, but Shen’s pack mentality proved to be the deciding factor.

Mohonasen setter Bryannah Green received the Most Valuable Player award when the Colonial Council girls volleyball coaches revealed their all-star selections Monday, Oct. 29.
Green led the Mighty Warriors with 105 service aces, 225 assists and 42 kills. She helped Mohonasen win its first Section 2 playoff match when the fifth-seeded Mighty Warriors defeated No. 4 Averill Park in the quarterfinals.
Mohonasen Libero Hailey DeGuire was chosen by the league’s coaches as the Defensive Player of the Year. DeGuire notched 185 digs for an average of 3.5 digs per match in 2018.
Outside hitter Sydney Neff from Academy of the Holy Names was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Neff had a hitting average of .562 to lead Holy Names’ offense, and she also led her team in defensive digs. The opening round of the Section 2 Class C and Class D girls volleyball tournaments took place Wednesday, Oct. 24.
In Class C, most of the higher seeds won their opening round matches. The exceptions were No. 12 Greenville (15-4) and No. 10 Tamarac (9-6). Greenville edged No. 5 Saratoga Central Catholic 3-2, while Tamarac swept No. 7 Hudson 25-13, 25-19 and 25-23.
No. 3 Stillwater (13-2), No. 4 Catskill (19-0), No. 6 Albany Academy for Girls (7-8) and No. 8 Canajoharie/Fort Plain (7-3) all won their opening round matches. Stillwater defeated No. 14 Chatham 3-0 to advance into the quarterfinals against Albany Academy for Girls, which defeated No. 11 Loudonville Christian 3-1. Catskill swept No. 13 Taconic Hills 3-0, and Canajoharie/Fort Plain defeated No. 9 Mechanicville 3-0. Five players had multi-goal games for No. 2 Schalmont in a 15-0 victory over No. 15 Corinth in the opening round of the Section 2 Class B girls soccer playoffs Thursday, Oct. 18.
Isabella Amoroso recorded a hat trick and two assists, while Sofia Cassano contributed two goals and two assists for the Sabres (15-1-1), ranked No. 4 among Class B teams in the New York State Sportswriters Association poll. Jules Monlea, Ashley Cirilla and Chloe Schaffer all tallied twice, and Isabella Almodovar added three assists. Brackets for the Section 2 girls soccer playoffs were announced Monday, Oct. 15, and two Suburban Council teams were among the five No. 1 seeds.
Bethlehem received the No. 1 seed in Class AA after winning the Blue Division title, while Averill Park claimed the No. 1 seed in Class A after finishing first in the Gray Division. Colonial Council champion Academy of the Holy Names (Class B), Wasaren League champion Stillwater (Class C) and Adirondack League runner-up Fort Ann (Class D) were the other three No. 1 seeds.
