Three Section 2 football teams have regional playoff games this weekend, while two others await their semifinal opponents.
Class AA champion Shaker (10-0) received a bye into the state semifinals after defeating Saratoga Springs 28-14 in the championship game Friday, Nov. 2, at Casey Stadium on the University at Albany campus. This bye is rotated between Sections 2, 1 and 9 on an annual basis. Shaker meets either Section 1 champion New Rochelle or Section 9 champion Newburgh Free Academy Saturday, Nov. 17, at Middletown High School.
Class A champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (9-1) also received a bye into the semifinals after Section X decided not to play in the regional round. The Spartans face the winner of the John Jay (Section 1)-Cornwall (Section 9) regional in the state semifinals Friday, Nov. 16, in Middletown.
Glens Falls (Class B), Cambridge/Salem (Class C) and Warrensburg (Class D) all play in this weekend’s regional round. Glens Falls meets Section 7 champion Beekmantown Friday, Nov. 9, at Shenendehowa High School, while Cambridge/Salem travels to Potsdam High School to play Section 10 champ Ogdensburg Free Academy. The opening round of the Section 2 Class C and Class D girls volleyball tournaments took place Wednesday, Oct. 24.
In Class C, most of the higher seeds won their opening round matches. The exceptions were No. 12 Greenville (15-4) and No. 10 Tamarac (9-6). Greenville edged No. 5 Saratoga Central Catholic 3-2, while Tamarac swept No. 7 Hudson 25-13, 25-19 and 25-23.
No. 3 Stillwater (13-2), No. 4 Catskill (19-0), No. 6 Albany Academy for Girls (7-8) and No. 8 Canajoharie/Fort Plain (7-3) all won their opening round matches. Stillwater defeated No. 14 Chatham 3-0 to advance into the quarterfinals against Albany Academy for Girls, which defeated No. 11 Loudonville Christian 3-1. Catskill swept No. 13 Taconic Hills 3-0, and Canajoharie/Fort Plain defeated No. 9 Mechanicville 3-0. Shenendehowa (AA), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (A), Broadalbin-Perth (B), Voorheesville (C) and Galway (D) are the No. 1 seeds in their respective classes for the 2018 Section 2 girls volleyball tournament.

Class AA – All semifinal games Friday, Oct. 26
No. 1 Shaker (8-0) vs. No. 4 Guilderland (5-3)
How they got there: Shaker capped an undefeated regular season by defeating crosstown rival Colonie 31-7, while Guilderland clinched the No. 4 seed by pulling away for a 41-19 victory over Christian Brothers Academy (3-5) Friday, Oct. 19. Guilderland’s victory avoided a four-way tie for fourth place, as both Bethlehem (4-4) and Niskayuna (4-4) won their final regular season games
No. 2 Shenendehowa (7-1) vs. No. 3 Saratoga Springs (6-2)
How they got there: Shen wrapped up the No. 2 seed by defeating Saratoga 35-7 at home. Brendan Belott threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead Shen to victory. Evan Vandeusen had a goal and an assist to lead New Lebanon to a 4-0 victory over Chatham Friday, Oct. 12, in a non-league boys soccer game.
Liam McDonald, James Lambert and Paulo Scolari also tallied for the Tigers, who finished the regular season with an 8-6-1 record.
Chatham has an overall record of 4-11-0 entering Sunday’s regular season finale against Patroon Conference rival Cairo-Durham.
Taconic Hills posted a 3-0 shutout over Chatham Monday, Sept. 24, in a Patroon Conference boys soccer game.
The Titans had several chances to get on the scoreboard in the first half, but it took a Chatham foul inside the Panthers’ penalty box for them to break through with five minutes before halftime. Chris Davis sent the penalty kick into the Chatham goal for a 1-0 Taconic Hills lead.
Davis struck again at the 71-minute mark off a feed from Schuyler Krzeminski, and he assisted on Kolby Clegg’s insurance goal with 10 minutes left for Taconic Hills.
Jesse Waddell scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to lead Helderberg Valley to a 34-13 victory at Watervliet Friday, Sept. 21, in a Section 2 Class C South Division football game.
Waddell had a 45-yard scoring run early in the opening quarter and finished another drive with a 10-yard touchdown for Helderberg Valley (3-1), which won its third consecutive game after an opening week loss to Voorheesville. Jake Stahl added a 66-yard touchdown reception late in the first quarter to put Helderberg Valley ahead 20-0. GUILDERLAND – The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys cross country team continued its string of Section 2 dominance by running away with the large school varsity division title at the Guilderland Invitational Saturday, Sept. 8, at Tawasentha Park.
The Spartans took five of the top eight spots to finish with 20 points. Guilderland was second in the large school team standings with 39 points, and Section 9’s Monroe-Woodbury placed third with 90 points. Collegiate High School won the small school division with 24 points, while Schuylerville edged Ichabod Crane 63-64 for second place. GUILDERLAND – The annual Guilderland Invitational cross country meet took place Saturday, Sept. 8, at Tawasentha Park. Approximately a dozen schools participated in the meet, including Guilderland, Averill Park and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake of the Suburban Council; Broadalbin-Perth and Schuylerville of the Foothills Council; Ichabod Crane and Mohonasen from the Colonial Council; and Chatham from the Patroon Conference.
