Niskayuna took advantage of a mistake by Shaker’s defense and pulled out a 3-2 overtime victory over the Blue Bison Thursday, Aug. 30, in a Suburban Council boys soccer game in Latham.
With Shaker leading 2-1 in the final two minutes of regulation, Shaker’s goalkeeper came out of the box to try to play a loose ball, only to miss it. A Shaker defender attempted to clear the ball, but it bounced off the goalie and ricocheted into the net for an own goal that tied the score at 2-2. Then in overtime, Niskayuna was awarded a penalty kick and converted it for the victory.
Jack Acquario scored both of Shaker’s goals, while Saidali Mesbahi tallied for Niskayuna in regulation.
Elsewhere in the Suburban Council, Averill Park and Ballston Spa played to a 2-2 tie, and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake shut out Columbia 2-0.
Ballston Spa took a 2-0 lead on goals by Ethan Cook and Michael Robyck. However, the Scotties allowed an own goal at the 58-minute mark, and Joey Sorriento corralled a long punt by goalkeeper Eric Schuman and scored to tie the game at 2-2.
Schuman made nine saves for Averill Park, and Ethan Shuhart had the same number of stops for Ballston Spa.
At Burnt Hills, Max Nemec broke a scoreless tie in the 57th minute off a feed from Jaegur DeRose, and Ethan VanVorst tallied in the 72nd minute to propel the Spartans past Columbia.
