The opening round of the Section 2 Class C and Class D girls volleyball tournaments took place Wednesday, Oct. 24.
In Class C, most of the higher seeds won their opening round matches. The exceptions were No. 12 Greenville (15-4) and No. 10 Tamarac (9-6). Greenville edged No. 5 Saratoga Central Catholic 3-2, while Tamarac swept No. 7 Hudson 25-13, 25-19 and 25-23.
No. 3 Stillwater (13-2), No. 4 Catskill (19-0), No. 6 Albany Academy for Girls (7-8) and No. 8 Canajoharie/Fort Plain (7-3) all won their opening round matches. Stillwater defeated No. 14 Chatham 3-0 to advance into the quarterfinals against Albany Academy for Girls, which defeated No. 11 Loudonville Christian 3-1. Catskill swept No. 13 Taconic Hills 3-0, and Canajoharie/Fort Plain defeated No. 9 Mechanicville 3-0.
Friday’s Class C quarterfinal match-ups include Canajoharie/Fort Plain at No. 1 Voorheesville (9-5), Greenville at Catskill, Tamarac at No. 2 Fonda-Fultonville (7-3) and Albany Academy for Girls at Stillwater.
In Class D, No. 12 Mekeel Christian (5-6) swept No. 5 Maple Hill 3-0 to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal against No. 4 Hartford (10-4). No. 9 Cambridge (6-9) defeated No. 8 Waterford-Halfmoon 3-1 to earn a chance to face top-seeded Galway (10-0). No. 6 Middleburgh (6-5) earned a three-game sweep against No. 11 Germantown to move into the quarterfinals against No. 3 Argyle (11-3), while No. 7 Duanesburg (6-5) edged No. 10 Fort Edward 3-2. Duanesburg faces No. 2 Mayfield (9-1).
